Tiger Cubs whip Wiley and Danville

By FRANK PUCKETT It.. BANNER SPORTS EDITOR Bainbridge took a crowd of some 350 fans to South Bend Saturday night and the Pointers pleased them with a 72-60 win over Riley. The 171 mile trip was worthwhile for the fans since Riley was labeled one of South Bend’s best. They had beaten Adams and Central on previous occasions. The Pointers ' iff spurted to a 34-30 halftime lead by slapping Z H a press on their opponent with 2:30 to go in the second period then came back and unloaded with seven straight field goals in the third period. From there the taller Riley bunch never got up.

By FRANK PUCKETT, JR Banner Sports Editor Greencastle protected their Western Indiana Conference undefeated slate Friday night when the3’ whipped visiting Terre Haute Wiley even though their leading scorer and rebounder Pete Norris, didn’t play three quarters and then rambled to a win over Danville Saturday night, once again without the services of Norris. Norris, not only the local

team’s top man but the leader of the WIC scoring race, fell flat on his back while attempting a shot underneath the bucket and had to be helped off the the floor with less than one minute off the clock in the second period. He was examined by the team’s physician in the dressing room, then taken to the local hospital for x-rays and tests Saturday morning. According to N. B. McCammon, GHS principal, Norris had suffered a bad bruise

Cloverdale racked up their 14th season win against only one loss Saturday night when they scrambled by Spencer. The host team took a 17-12 lead over Cloverdale, but an 18-8 second period put the Clovers into command at the half. When the county champs came back in the third period they slapped a press on Spencer and forced them into seven turnovers that broke their

backs. Four Cloverdale players scored in double figures with Rick Brownsburg and something Ford falling fifteen points off his average with 15 points. He special is planned for spectators, connected on 5 of 19 tries. New Market travels to Cloverdale to- Twenty-eight junior high

and in all probabilities would not be able to play for a week. While Norris was taking his unexpected rest. 6-3 center Terry Ross stepped into the spotlight and took over the reins as top scorer by pumping in 48 points, 24 both nights. The hot-handed jump shot artist fired in 20 of 43 shots over the weekend, 11 against Wiley and 9 against Danville. The Cubs moved into a 21-17 first period lead against the Terre Haute challenger, but got outscored 15-lt in the second period and the half closed at 36-36. Coming back with a fired up press in the third stanza Greencastle forced Wiley into six btgi

errors. At 3:45 the contest was tied at 41-41, Greencastle pulled ahead with four quick points, but Wiley’s Robertson came off the bench and did what he had made a habit of that night and brought his team back into the lead with five straight points, 46-45. Then like clockwork Ross went bang bang and the Cubs led by three points, then five, and finally closed the period 55-48. Little Jay Frye stole the early fourth quarter show' when he stole the ball three times and chalked up two assists in putting the Cubs into their largest commanding margin 61-50. Wiley called on a press, but Greencastle had made their

The Waveland crew blasted away for 29 of 44 field goals for a hearty 65 percentage while the Indians eennected on only 88 percent of their shots. Coach Dave Bussing said Waveland hit real well, but the game wasn’t one of Reelsvtile’s best defensive efforts. e a a ■ The Greencastle basketball schedule gives the Cubs Saturday night, February 8, game with Sullivan—incorrectly. The band broke in two and the crystal flew off. Myers just reached down, swooshed it off the floor, and kept right on encouraging his team on. They went ahead and beat Wiley 45-43 to bring their season record to 12-1. They play at Rockville tonight and Tuesday in a four-way tourney.

Evansville's platoon system catches up with DePauw, 92-75

Evansville defeated DePauw Saturday night in Evansville, 92-75, but the Tiger first five outscored the Aces’ first unit, 62-42. It was Arad McCutchans famous second platoon that finally wore the Tigers down and succeeded in opening the game up after DePauw trailed only 65-58 with 7:07 to play. The Evansville mentor used his second unit more than his first in helping the winners collect their 14th victory in 16 games. The last time he sent them in Evansville led 57-53 with 13:18 left in the game. When they departed nine minsutes later they had outscored the tiring Tigers, 25-11, and held an 82-64 lead with 4:28 left. The Tigers didn’t help themselves during this critical

stretch. After picking up only three personals and committing only two errors in the first 12 minutes of the second half, the Tigers collected four quick fouls and made three errors. The fouls started an Evansville parade to the line where they sank 11 of 12 in a stretch of 3:24. DePauw in the meantime never got a single crack from the foul line and lost Tom McCormick and Mike O’Connell on personals. McCormick went out with 5:47 left with 20 points. O’Connell followed at the 8:56 mark with four points. DePauw, however, did right well at the foul line where it hit a season high of .885 once they got to the stripe. The losers cashed in 23 of 26 including 15 of 16 in the first half when DePauw trailed 46-42 at inter-! mission. DePauw had a string of 16 going before Tom McGurk, who led all scorers with 21 points, missed the first of a one-one with 8:57 to play. High for Evansville was “reserve” Roger Miller who finished with 17 point*. The rest of the Aces’ second unit collected 33 points, including 13 by Darrell Adams and nine by Mike Owens. Starting Evansville center 6-9 Tom Niemeier paced the first unit with 11 points and Howard Pratt got

12.

It was the big Niemeier who tossed in three straight baskets in the second half that pulled Evansville out of a 47-46 deficit and gave it the lead it never relinquished. He went one on one against McGurk and plunked in all three of his baskets in the game in a span of 113 seconds. DePauw had to play the Aces without the benefit of highscoring regular guard Dave Browning. He sat out the game wtih an injured ankle. His absence hurt DePauw’s chances which looked mighty good right up until those final seven minutes. (It may be a different story when the Aces come to Greencastle March 2.) point and the two eluba settled for 18 a piece. Ross got help from John New and Frye, who both had 14, and Don Irwin, who collected 13 points—eleven coming in the first half. At Danville it was just a little different story as the Cubs had to scramble to get a 57-50 win. The only resemblance it had to the Friday night game was a 24 point effort by Ross, most of them coming when needed the worst. It was 14-14 at the first period close, then when Dee Monnett tucked away a couple of free throws and Jay Frye slipped a twenty footer through the nets Greencastle commanded for the first time in the second period, 31-27. The host Warriors rallied back quick and brought the score to 38-38 after Greencastle had went into an eight point lead. At that point Ross showed what he was worth and deliberated with two quick jumpers from the key and Greencastle led at the quarter close, 42-38. Danville came firing right back once more only this time they took the lead, 45-44. Coach Dave McCracken called time but when his team went back onto the floor Danville’s Gibbs swiped the ball on the inbounds play and converted to put his team into a three point lead. But never fear, Ross was near and zip zip the Cubs commanded

48-47. Frye helped out with another steal on the return trip down the floor, he had five that night, and fired it to an awaiting Ross who promptly deposited it through the nets. The Cubs scored 16 points from the 4:25 mark to the game’s end and Ross had 10 of them. Once Danville’s coach jumped off the bench and yelled at a boy who had just fouled Ross, “Why didn’t you pick someone else to foul, you know he’s gonna hit ’em.’ Don Irwin also repeated a Friday night total of 13 points to be only other Cub in double figures. Danville’s Rodney and Gibbs had 13 and 12 points to lead the hosts. Greencastle hit 45 per cent of their shots and 51 per cent of their free throws against Wiley, 39 per cent against Danville and 73 per cent from the line. Wiley's shooting was almost the same as they scored one more field goal than the Cubs and Danville’s was the same as they scored two more field goals than the local crew. The Cubs winning free throws amounted to 15 of 29 Friday night and 19 of 26 Saturday night.
