According to an article in the February issue of Family Circle Magazine, cheating goes on all the way from elementary school through graduate school. It is not confined to any economic group (underprivileged children cheat, privileged children cheat) or to just one sex (boys cheat, girls cheat). Can educators combat cheating by teaching moral values in the nation's schools? The chaplain of Yale University takes to task those educators who think that moral values can be taught, like subject matter, in the classroom. A child's moral training starts in the home. He absorbs moral values in the early years of life, and it is naive to expect the school to instill what the home has not. Every child, rich or poor, is a member of a larger family — society — that influences him much as his home does. And what example are the men and women of our society setting him? Who steals millions of dollars' worth of paper clips, erasers and other supplies from offices every year? In 1961 pilferages by business employees was estimated to be a billion dollars a year. Petty thefts of towels, ash trays and the like from hotels, motels and restaurants are so common as to be classified as a national pastime. Then there's our political cheating, exposed with disheartening regularity in the news. Its overall impact upon youngsters is considerable. A senator who uses part of his campaign contributions to pay up personal bills and pay off loans; a congressman who puts his wife on the office payroll, though she does not work for him, then pockets her salary; a senator who heads a congressional committee that deals with railroad matters, while his law firm accepts $200,00 in six years from a major railroad. These and other questionable political practices combine with crushing force to quash youthful idealism. With such examples of cheating forming a part of the life around him, the child cannot help being influenced by them. To understand why cheating goes on in our schools is one thing, to condone it is another. No circumstance can excuse the practice. Cheating is wrong. But it is just as wrong when an adult cheats as when a child cheats. It is just as wrong when a congressman cheats as when an Air Force cadet cheats. Can we afford to wink at the one and be aghast at the other? Although cheating is in part a social ill, the way to battle it is to start with the individual.
