TN SOUTH CAROLINA, where the record for auto acdX dents and fatalities is frightening, considerate authorities have ordered this sign displayed at the state line on maintraveled roads: “Beware of South Carolina driv- ters! They are the worst BEWAgf in the world—and they Occuf.j.j are dying to prove it!” * * • a • • There are solid belly laughs in Corey Ford’e ‘The Time of Laughter’'— a chronicle giving the great humorists of the twenties their just due. Ford is at his best in his recollections of the good old days at the Players* Club in New York. Here it was that an obnoxious member told Oliver Herford that a fellow Player had offered him five hundred dollars to resign. “Don’t do it, old man,’' Herford advised him. "Hold out for a better offer." Here, too, an actor named Ransom, a regular in the poker games, assumed an expression so revealing when, he picked up a good hand that Franklin P. Adams ordained, “Anyone who looks at Ransom’s face is cheating.” And, finally, it was at the Players' that Don Marquis, after a month of abstinence, ordered a double martini with the proud declaration, ‘Tve conquered my blank blank will power.” e e • From the notebooks of CoL Francis Duffy: There are two ways to acquire old furniture: buy it or raise a family. Medical science decrees that the second day of a strict diet is the easiest. By that time you’re off of it O 1968, by Bennett Cert Diatrubuted by King Features Syndicate
