frequently achieved with slenderizing wrap-around bodices that further accented the tiny waist-

The more daring V-necklines —shown on daytime as well as evening dresses—were set off by huge white organdy collars, giving them a demure sex appeal. Striking mints were equally P'-mlar and were frequency repeated in the puffy berets or around the crown of stiff straw hats that frequently accompa-
nied the ensembles.
Old-fashioned organdy looked the newest, however. It was used for entire dresses, including one sweet mod® 1 with each of the ruffles making up the bodice and skirt appliqued with straw flowers. A neat self-belted

Court rules on teachers' oath WASHINGTON UPI — The Supreme Court ruled Monday in a New York case that teachers may be required to take an oath of allegiance to uphold state and federal Constitutions. The court, in a brief order, affirmed a ruling to this effect handed down June 5, 1967, by a special three-judge federal panel in New York. The decision has been appealed by 27 teachers at Adephia University, Garden City, Long Island. They contended that the oath infringed on their right of free speech. This is the first time the Supreme Court has ruled on the constitutionality of a positive oath as distinguished from disclaimers of subversive affiliation or advocacy. The 1934 New York law applies to teachers in public schools or in private schools whose real property is exempt from taxation. Those unwilling to take the oath are barred from employment. Through inadvertence, Adelphi had failed to give the oath to its faculty until the matter was called to its attention in 1966. The 27 faculty members then sued to have the law declared invalid.
HUMAN BACK GETS
‘F’ FOR DESIGN
SAN FRANCISCO UPI ~ The human back is not a good example of engineering design, according to an orthopedic surgeon at the University of California Medical Center here. Dr. Verne T. Inman said a good many complaints about backache can be traced to na-
ture’s faculty design.
“If we were to construct a derrick, we certainly wouldn’t run the lifting cables almost parallel to the shaft,” he said. “We would run them off at an angle to achieve better lifting capacity.” But In the human
back, the muscles

HIGH FLYING LONDON UPI —A New type of stickum is going on the back of British postal stamps. It could give lickers a hangover. Stamp printers Harison and Sons Ltd., said the new backing gum would contain alcohol. Not much, but enough to give heavy users a light buzz. The new backing replaces the traditional gum Arabic, and difficult to obtain, and contains minute quantities of alchol.

A very rewarding letter was received this week by Mrs. Alexander, of Ernie's Open Air Market. Do you remember the note from the little girl in Canada that Mrs. Alexander found tied to a Christmas tree just before last Christmas? The little girl told us that she was very poor and wished someone would send gifts to her and her brothers and sister. Well, her request was fulfilled. Much to Mrs. Alexander's surprise she received this letter the other day from that little girl. It was addressed to Mr. Ernie's Market, 206 S. Bloomington, Greencastle, Ind. And it goes something like this; About 2 weeks ago I received a very nice parcel and I was glad and happy. All nice candy and all nice clothing. The clothing all fits. Just about the good size for us. Also very happy for apples and oranges. All nice candy. I am 9 years old, please sometime if you have some used clothing again don't forget us. I will pray for your family and all your friends with you. Thank you very much. From Edna Thibodeau Tracadie New Brunswick, Canada Box 381 And then she closed with this P.S.: My sisters name is Linda, 12, and brothers name Eugene, 5 and Eulise, 4, and Maurise, 3 years old. Don't forget, I am glad you found my note in the tree. Bye, Bye, answer sometime please. What can you say, except that this little girl must be a very, very nice and thoughtful child. But you wonder why, in this day and age, a small child must write notes and hang them on trees asking for food, clothing or toys at Christmas time (or anytime). There must be something wrong somewhere, for our children should not have to grow up under these conditions.
Felix Knauer, who handles the circulation for The Daily Banner, and Jim Downes, one of our pressmen, seem to be making heavy bets these days. They are going to see who can lose the most weight over the next three-month period. Now mind you, I'm not saying they're overweight, but they had to go to the Feed Mill to get weighed. Luckily they found scales there that would do the trick or they might have had to try the Livestock Center. Jim weighs 284 pounds while Felix only weighs 278 pounds. I sure hope they don't wilt away. Felix has the advantage though, he can always walk a paper route.
