THE AUSTRALIAN SPINY ANTEATER IS ONE OF THE TWO MAMMALS WHICH LAY Efr&S. THE

OFF and RUNNING By Tony D. Manuel General Manager

I was just thinking the other day how lucky we are to have so many fine grocery stores in Greencastle. Have you ever noticed how convenient and well located they are? In the north part of town we have Kroger, and they are enlarging their store to better serve you. In the downtown area we have two fine stores, A&P and Conrad's Stop 'N Shop. A&P is talking about building a new store and Stop 'N Shop, which is locally owned, has just finished remodeling their store. South of town we have Gould's Market which is another one of our fine locally owned markets. East of town we have Marsh Supermarket and just off the downtown area is the IGA Store which also is locally owned. And the people who work in these stores are more than friendly; they're helpful. And to me this is important. When I go into a grocery store I never know where anything is, so I must always ask the clerk and you know they always know just where most things are. Gee, I wonder how they know where all those different items are. I can't even remember where they put the bread most of the time. I guess that's why my wife doesn't let me do much grocery shopping. * * * Since we are talking about grocery stores, someone told me this little story the other day. It seems that Johnny, 10 years old, applied for a job as grocery boy for the summer. The grocer wanted a serious-minded youth, so he put Johnny to a little test. "Well, my boy, what would you do with a million dollars?" he asked. "Oh, I don't know — I wasn't expecting that much at the start," said Johnny. Could be true, just could be! * * + I know a group of local businessmen are working hard to get the new police academy located here in Putnam County. With their continued hard work and a little political pull we stand a fair chance of getting it. I just don't know from where we're going to get the political pull, though. The Governor says he wants to get the ball rolling on this project. I just hope he rolls it our way. Oh, I almost forgot. What about the Action Team? They've got a lot of push; I wonder if they've got any pull. BANNER AOS PAY US! THEM OFTEN

Opening lead - nine of hearts. The part score is frequently treated as a stepchild of the game, but there are many occasions when a part-soore deal can be just as exciting and instructive as one played at the game or slam level. For example, take this deal played in a match between Great Britain and South Africa. At the first table, the British North-South pair arrived at two spades and made the contract

South African North-South pair got to three spades on the bidding shown and West led the nine of hearts. Declarer covered with the jack and won the king with the ace, after which he played the A-Q of spades. West (Nice Gardener) took the queen with the king, and, after long thought, returned the deuce of clubs, won in dummy with the king as East followed suit with the eight. South had left himself n® quick way of returning to hie hand to draw East’s last trumpt and tried to work his way out of dummy by leading & Io\f heart. But East (Albert Rose), alive to the situation that had devel*’ oped, went up with the ten, r#» turned the three <r>t cluba te Gardener’s ace, ruffed the dull continuation to bring the defense it* fourth trick, and then returned a diamond to the aoe to put declarer down one. So Britain gained 240 points on the deal, which may or may not be much to write home about, but It was a well-earned profit nevertheless. Of course, declarer could have made the contract by playing the hand a little differently, but the fact remains that Gardener

with an overtrick for a score of and Rose collaborated perfectly 140 points. (In duplicate tour-, once they were given the chance naments, a bonus of 50 points Is to exploit the situation that awarded to a pair who bid and arose. They each had a chore make a part score.) to perform, and they acquitted At the second table, the j themselves well. (C 3968, King Features Syndicate, Ine.) M8-8t
