Daughter follows mothers steps on Wall Street

By WILLIAM D. LAFFLER UPI Financial Editor NEW YORK UPI —Debbie King is somthing of an expert on the operation of the New York Stock Exchange, even though she is only 19. You see, she had some help from Mom. Mother was, and Miss King is, a visitors’ guide to the financial center. The teen-ager can tell anyone who wants to know exactly how orders are executed on the floor of the big trading place on

Wall Street and she can tell them what the ticker tape symbols mean, what a specialist does and answer all pertinent questions about the Big Board. Miss King does this every day the Exchange is open. She is one of 10 girl guides who work in the visitors’ gallery and exhibit hall of the Exchange. “Many of the questions are easy but some are really difficult,” Miss King said in an interview. “We not only get

questions about the trading floor but also on the over-the-counter market, the bond market and brokerage house procedures.” Most of the girl guides, like Miss King, are Americans. But two are from Europe. And five are able to answer questions in French, Spanish, or German. During an average day, Miss King will spend a good part of her time on the gallery overlooking the trading floor of the Exchange, where about 40,000

orders are executed daily. She I also will spend some time telling visitors how the Exchange’s modem computer-driven mar-! ket data system works. She also! may double as an usherette at the Exhibit Hall’s 74-seat theater or as an operator of the miniature puppet theater which demonstrates how brokers bring buyers and sellers of stocks together. But the most demanding Job takes place on the gallery where visitors’ reactions usually differ.

“Some glance briefly at the! floor, then turn and watch as | you deliver the explanation,” j Miss King said. “Others scan the entire floor and you can almost see the questions forming before you start the explanation. But many are just overwhelmed and stare straight ahead.” The guide said foreign visitors are her favorites “mainly because they are so polite and interested.” In choosing persons like
