The Lighter Side By DICK WEST WASHINGTON UPI — Miniskirts, it appears, are coming to an end. Or, to avoid any misunderstanding, perhaps I had better say that miniskirts are on their way out. They have already reached the end. The demise of the minis can be foreseen in the news that two leading designers are dropping hemlines in their spring collections. When one designer drops a skirt, it can be taken for grant- i ed that skirt-dropping soon will become rampant In the fashion industry. There are indeed felicitous tidings for those of us who are old enough to remember when there was more to women than knees and eyelashes. “I’m not saying a woman’s other component parts no longer exist. I’m only saying it takes a concerted effort to notice them. Knees are all right in their place, which is somewhere between the ankle and the hip. But when three-quarters of a woman’s shanks are left dang-; ling below her hemline, knees become domineering and overbearing. One begins to feel intimidated by knees and one longs for some relief. The most natural place to turn to is the eyes. But that refuge has now been rendered discommodious. Miniskirts, un-
The nation is embarked on another presidential election year with the voters showing symptoms of confusion and frustration over the war in Vietnam, racial strife, inflation and other politically volatile problems. If the war would go away, it might be easier to find solutions to the other problems. President Johnson, who is assumed to be a candidate for reelection, can look forward to massive protests, not only from Republicans but from members of his own Democratic party and possibly from one or two new parties. The Republicans can look forward with hope but not overconfidence to recapturing the White House and control of at least one house of Congress. After the turmoil caused by their election disaster in 1964 with Barry M. Goldwater as their presidential candidate, they showed a spectacular capacity to rebound in the state and congressional elections last year. The Democrats are nervous but not yet in a state of alarm. They hav* held the White House in all but eight years since 1932 and have controlled both houses of Congress in all but four of these years. Both they and the Republicans know that only two incumbent presidents — William Howard Taft and Herbert Hoover — have been denied reelection in this century. • • • Since we re talking about politics, I see that Mrs. Lyndon Johnson has been dropped from the list of best-dressed women for 1967. And to complicate matters is the fact that while Mrr Lyndon Johnson was being dropped as a best-dressed, her daughter. Lynda Bird, leaped into ninth place. Now you know that has to hurt! At any rate, Mrs. Johnson stands a good chance of being restored to the list this year. She ll have less competition now that Lynda Bird is married. You can't buy too many original creations on a Marine officer's pay. But it helps if your daddy just happens to be President. • * • Modern political campaigners might take a lesson in graciousness and kindness from Edward Campbell, the great British statesman. Once when Campbell was opposing Thackeray for a seat in Parliament, the two contenders, in the course of their campaigning, met and engaged Ln friendly conversation. On taking leave of his rival. Thackeray remarked, “May the best man win!” “Oh. no,” replied Campbell, “I hope not, I want to win!”
fortunately, became fashionable j at about the same time as false ! eyelashes. Say I am at a party and am trying to ignore the knees of a woman seated next to me. I raise my eyes to hers, and find something equally disturbing. Her eyelids are fluttering. This no longer signifies that she is either flirting or bombed. It may only mean the barometer is falling. A slight change in air pressure is enough to start false eyelashes vibrating. Women apparently have the idea that eyelash appendages are coquettish. Actually, they are unnerving. Thirty minutes in a room full of fluttering eyelashes is about

all my nervous system will tolerate. At my last party I developed a severe tic. Since the advent of miniskirts, many women use kneecap cosmetics. If the trend continues, they are certain to start pasting false eyelashes on their knees. This is why I am eager for the miniskirt requiem. Fluttering kneecaps would surely destroy the last vestige of my social composure.
