Library news The Greencastle - Putnam County Public Library has recently received the book, “South America and Central America,” by Jean Dorst. This book was given to the library in honor of Dr. Russell Vermillion, by the Putnam County Dental Society. This book presents the animals, plants and land forms of all South and Central America, from the West Indies to the Antarctic, in a rich detailed text and extraordinary pictures. The record reveals a continent second to none in the forms of life and in awesome landscapes. South America has a great diversity of environments, from the Amazon rain forest to the bleak steppes of the Andes, from the swamps of the Chaco , plain to the coastal deserts of Peru and Chile, the arid scrub of northwestern Brazel and the pampas of Argentina, and the lush tropical beaches of the West Indies. This kind of environment makes for a fantastic richness of animal life, a wonderland for the expert zoologist. This is a beautiful book with a wealth of superb photographs, many never published before.

5 traffic deaths during weekend By United Pres» International The first two weekends of 1068 produced Just nine traffic fatalities in Indiana—five the past weekend and four a week earlier. However, the 1968 toll today was at least 36, compared with 35 a year ago. Indiana recorded the few deaths in 54 hours despite the generally poor driving conditions caused by snow and ice. All occurred Friday night or Saturday morning and in each case the slippery pavement was

blamed in part.

Heart transplant patient enters 14th day smiling CAPE TOWN, South Africa UPI—Philip Blaiberg today entered the 14th day since hie heart transplant operation with a smile on his face because his daughter Jill was flying home to see him. Jill, studying Hebrew language at T1 Aviv, was en route from a stopover in Rome. Dr. Christiaan Barnard said Sunday night his team would not perform any more heart transplants until Blaiberg’s progress sheds more light on problems of postoperative care. Blaiberg’s wife Eileen told her husband of their daughter’s visit Sunday. “He didn’t say anything but his face just lit up,” she said. “His smile was too terrific! I could tell he was very excited. He’s been asking for her.” Anti-infection precautions for Blaiberg have been so strict at Groote Schuur Hospital that Mrs. Blaiberg may talk to her husband only through a glass partition. Blaiberg, a 58-year-old retired dentist, was given the heart of a 25-year-old man two weeks ago. Barnard’s and the world’s first heart transplant patient, Louis Washkansky, died from pneumonia 18 days after his surgery. Sunday Blaiberg was allowed to sit up in a specially sterilized chair while eating supper. “He is bright, cheerful and is eating well,” a medical bulletin said. “The condition of his heart is satisfactory and his sore throat has almost cleared up completely.”

Second sixth day could be a mess WASHINGTON UPI — It says here in the Farmers’ Almanac that 1968 is going to be a “bissextile” year. Sounds like fun. But before you go out and do something you may later regret. perhaps I had better explain what the term means. My dictionary defines it as follows : “An Intercalary day in the Julian calendar added to February every fourth year. It followed February 24, the sixth day before the calends of March, and hence was counted as a second sixth day.” Now pause here a moment and try to visualize two sixth days. Sort of drives you up the wall, doesn't it? I mean, a second sixth day can make for one hell of a confusing week. But don’t worry about it. We don’t uae the Julian calendar any more. Now we use the Gregorian calendar. Which in some ways is even worse. In the Julian calendar, February was the last month of the year. By the time people got to the end of the year they were already so tired that on extra sixth day or two didn't much matter. But in the Gregorian calendar, February is the second month. We are off to a fresh start. Breezing along toward March under a full head of steam. Then the bissextile comes along and slows us up. The fact that the intercalary day now follows Feb. 28. rather than Feb. 24. doesn't make us less resentful. Nor does the fact that we now refer to the bissextile as “leap year.” It still throws us off stride. What I’m trying to suggest is that there must be a better way of doing things. What we need, obviously, is an entirely new calendar. Several proposals along that line already have been submitted. But none in my opinion satisfactorily solves the bissex- 1 tile problem.

Convenience is a great thing. Many times we take advantage of our conveniences. The other evening we needed a quart of milk for our two-year-old. But, naturally, it was past 10 in the evening, and if our son wakes up in mornings without getting his milk, we have problems. Where do you go to get milk at this hour at night? There’s only one place I know of, and that's IGA. So I jumped in the car. drove down and got the milk and was home again in a matter of minutes. Now, my friends, this is convenience. I’m sure that Mr. Edwards did not make enough money off my quart of milk to pay for his light bill, but I also wonder if he knows just how many Greencastle people really appreciate his being open 24 hours a day. I certainly appreciate it, for you see at my house we never seem to need anything until after all the other stores are closed. I really don't understand how a woman can go grocery shopping on Thursday and need milk on Friday.

I did it, I did it, I did it! Well, almost I did it. I built my first snowman in many, many years Saturday afternoon. I really can't take credit for all of the work, for you see my young son helped some and then my wife came out and told me just what I was doing wrong. I must admit I’m not very handy at thes# things. But we all dug in and had a lot of fun. If the truth wer« known. Rose and I had much more fun than Ronnie did. We

The snow really isn't too bad. The action team has most of the streets cleared off and driving around town isn’t too hard. I think they are doing an excellent job In keeping the streets cleared. But just like everyone else. I wish they wouldn't push all that snow in my driveway. Since they are doing such a good job on the streets, I won’t complain though. I can always ahovel
