Hollywood news

By VERNON SCOTT HOLLYWOOD UPI —There Is only one thing more rare than a day in spring, and that is a television show that has been on the air 10 years or more. With a single exception, those shows that have survived a full

decade of prime time on the tube have starred an outstanding personality. “Gunsmoke” is the only drama among the handful, and the venerable horse opera is now in its 13th year. All time champ is Ed Sullivan. The stone-faced one is

It is easy enough to see that with a club lead declarer has the suit doubly stopped. It is less apparent, though, that after a club lead the suit is actually triply stopped if South plays his cards properly. Declarer failed to make this observation and, as a result, lost the contract. He covered the four of clubs with, the six and won East’s seven with the nine. After crossing to dummy with a heart, declarer led the nine of diamonds and finessed, losing to West’s queen. West returned the king of clubs, which South ducked, and

continued with the queen. South won but could now do no better than lead another diamond. West took the ace, cashed the 8-2 of clubs, and South went down one. Actually, declarer should have made four notrump. His goal should be to establish three diamond tricks before West establishes his clubs. He is certain of making the contract if he can accomplish this. According to the Rule of Eleven—assuming West has led his fourth best club — declarer can tell that East has only one club higher than the four. (Declarer subtracts four from the magic number eleven, leaving seven cards higher than the four in the North, East and South hands. Since six of these cards are in plain view, East can have only one.) Declarer should play the ten from dummy on the opening lead. If East’s club is the seven or eight, the ten will win and South is assured of a triple stopper in the suit. If East’s club is the queen or king, South wins with the ace and is likewise sure of two more stoppers in the form of dummy’s jack and his own nine. By playing high from dummy at trick one, South assures himself of winning the race for the establishment of his long suit. He settles the issue on his first play.

celebrating hia 20th year on the air this season with the naming of a New York theater after him. Many attribute the Sullivan success to his lack of professional polish. He is someone with whom we peasants are able to identify. Not far behind Sullivan and his “rilly big shew” is Red Skelton, the master clown, with 15 years to his record. There is no explaining Skelton’s weekly high ratings and longevity except that he must be the funniest man on television, otherwise he would have gone the way of a dozen lesser

comedians.

Jackie Gleason, off and on, has had a 15-year run on television. The round one has had a variety of formats, but has managed to hold In there year after year. The only female on the list of 10-year veterans is Lucille Ball, another strong personality who has managed to survive 16 years, although not In an unbroken chain, as have Sullivan, Skelton and “Gunsmoke.” Curiously, one thing all these shows have in common is the same network—CBS. NBC-TV hasn’t a single show that has shown a 10-year run, although "Bonanza” is now in its ninth

year.
