Even in the most important pair ehampionships there are comparatively few hands where the bidding and play follow the

same line at various tables.

For example, take this deal, which occurred in the London Sunday Times invitation tournament in 1963. When SwinnertonDyer and Barbour, of England, held the North-South cards e g a i n s t the world - famous French pair of Jais and Trezel,

the bidding went as shown.

The two diamond hid was a bit of whimsy created on the spot by Jais in an effort to

confuse the opponents.

Whatever its merit, the out-

come was satisfactory from the East-West point of view, since North-South proceeded to bid a slam that went down one. Of course, only a heart lead could defeat six diamonds—but Jais led a heart. At another table, where Konstam and J. Tarlo were NorthSouth against their British countrymen Franklin and !«, Tarlo, the bidding went as follows:

ten.

At still another table, where Friday and Rodrigue, also of England, were North-South, the bidding went: West North East South Pass 14 Pass 3 4 Pass 3 78 Pass 5 4 Pass 6 4 East failed to find the heart lead at this table, and, after winning the opening club lead and drawing trumps, declarer played a spade toward the king. West ducked, giving South his twelfth trick, but it would not have helped him to go up with the ace. Without the opening heart lead. East - West were doomed.

Wall street chatter NEW YORK UPI —Kahn, Peck, A Company says the market should move ahead sharply on the near term with a rise to the 940-950 level of the Dow Jones industrial average a reasonable possibility. The investment firm suggests a policy of “judicious” profit taking during periods of strength pending a “clearer fix” on the possible outcome of present uncertainties. E. F. Hutton A Co. says market strength at this time of

the year is “not considered nearly as bullish as weakness would probably be construed as being bearish.” The company says a number of issues likely will be adversely affected by the White House proposals to restrict overseas investment and travel. Wright Investors* Service predicts the stock market will go at least 10 per cent higher this year with blue chip issues leading and sustaining the advance. It also says there is a possibility the DJ industrial average will pierce the 1,000 level and will outperform the average common stock by a wide margin.
