TELEVISION IN REVIEW
By RICK DU BROW HOLLYWOOD UPI — The recent withdrawal of the International Telephone & Telegraph Corp. from its proposed merger with the American Broadcasting Co. can be translated into terms directly affecting television watchers. The ITT withdrawal, in the face of Justice Department opposition to what would have been the largest communications combine in history, means, in one area, that ABC-TV simply will not be getting—for a while, at least — the added money it hoped for. And this of course relates directly to programming. As one news story put it, the proposed merger, for ABC-TV, “would have provided an infusion of new financial resources needed to strengthen its competitive position against the other two major networks,” CBS-TV and NBC-TV. ABC-TV is the smallest and youngest of the three major networks. It has fewer affiliate stations than the other two, and less muscle to force these clients to run certain shows to the advantage of the network. This translates directly into ratings trouble — which ABC-TV has plenty of — and also into deciding which shows are likely to become popular because of audience accessibility.
Being a financial underdog also means less opportunity to attract bigger stars on a regular basis. In a sense, this has made it possible for ABC-TV to create more excitement for televiewers at times than the two larger networks. Unable to compete with CBS-TV and NBC-TV on their own terms, ABC-TV tries time and again to break down the format of traditional programming with “fad” shows, such as “Shindig” and “Batman.” They usually don’t have much lasting power, but their quick hit-and-run effect, generally capitalizing on a trend — either youthful dancing or camp comedy — gets publicity out of all proportion to its worth. Having to cancel shows in large numbers — because it has to gamble more — ABC-TV also often has more air time to experiment with, but doesn’t do it enough. However, it has showed the public how blockbuster movies can be presented with clever promotion and scheduling; It provided last season’s provocative “Stage 67” series; and this semester it is offering two-hour adaptations of plays like ‘‘The Diary of Anne Frank,” “Dial M for Murder” and “Johnny Belinda.”

CONTRACT BRIDGE By B. Jay Becker (Top Record-Holder in Masters' Individual Championship Play)
BIDDING QUIZ
You are the dealer, both sides vulnerable, and have opened One Spade. Partner responds Two Hearts. What would you bid now with each of the following
five hands?
1. 4KJ852 VQ3 +AQ4 *AQ7 2. +AJ8743 VQ92 +AK62 4 8. 4AK96S <*K74 +72 AK82 4. 4AKQ53 *A752 +K3 485 5. 4AKJ764 VK8643 49 *4 1. Three notrump. The jump to three notrump shows 17 to 19 high-card points, strength in the unbid suits, and, of course, notrump distribution. It follows that partner is then in good position to judge the best final contract, since the rebid identifies the exact nature of the
opening bid.
2. Three diamonds. There is a good chance for a slam, but the best trump suit and the level at which to play the hand are still uncertain. The intention is to show heart support next and thus, by implication, identify the shortage of clubs. Three diamonds Lb a strong rebid, since the opener volimtarily climbs into the three level. It is roughly equivalent to jumping to three spades over two hearts, though it does of course show a different type of hand. It would be wrong to jump directly to three spades — first because the suit is not strong enough, and second, because the distribution of the hand would not be properly represented.
3. Three hearts. Although the hand is a minimum, standing by Itself, it rises, in value when a heart fit is discovered. Since partner practically guarantees i at least five hearts, there is no I good reason to suppress the ! heart support by rebidding the spades. 4. Four hearts. This is obvi- j ously a better hand in support of hearts than the preceding one, and the best way of showing the extra values is by leaping to four hearts. It can be reasonably assumed that partner has 10 or more points for the two heart response, which means that game is virtually certain. If It develops that partner has more than minimum values, j he will presumably carry on 1 towards a slam. However, we i can do nothing more constructive over two hearts than jump to four at this point in order to indicate at least some interest in a slam. 5. Four notrump. For practical purposes, the number of tricks that can be made depends on the number of aces partner has. The Blackwood four notrump bid commands partner to respond in terms of aces. The intention is to stop at five hearts if partner responds five diamonds (one ace); to bid six hearts if he responds five hearts (two aces); and to bid seven hearts if he responds five spades (three aces).
