Ceylon proves to be a real "Gem of The Ocean'

COLOMBO UPI—One of the world's greatest sources of precious gems is the island of Ceylon, off India's southern tip. Round-the-world air travelers can visit Ceylon at no extra cost. Rubies and sapphires, cats’ eyes and alexandrites, amethysts, acquamarines and a host of other precious and

s^mi-precious stones are found in abundance in mineral-rich Ceylon. Tourists may visit the gem pits and the workshops where the stones are cut and polished by craftsmen using ancient techniques. Geologists explain that Ceylon is actually a 20.000-foot mountain, only the top of which

emerges from the sea. The great gem deposits were washed down from the uplands and covered with gravel. Patient digging rewards lessees with extraordinary finds. Most of the pits are located in Ratnapura, accessible by car from Colombo in 2 J 2 hours. Tour operators offer conducted excursions. The pits are shallow troughs near river beds. Miners dig the gravel and sift it in trays. The stones are ground on manually operated wheels, and the gems are set and sold chiefly by Colombo dealers.

Ceylon’s gems were known to King Solomon, who ordered specimen’s for the Queen of Sheba. Marco Polo, too, returned with fabulous hoards. Ceylon's glittering treasures have found their way into many American public collectoins. The Smithsonian Institution in Washington. D.C. lists the following exhibits in its illustrated booklet No. 4608 on gems: a 50 kt. red-violet star ruby ... a 316 kt. blue star sapphire . . . 2 71 kt. pale blue aquamarine . . . a 42 kt. brown tournmaline . . . a 46 kt. pale blue spinel ... and many other stones.

Modest collectors will find satisfaction in many Ceylon stones that have yet to attain the widest popularity. Some of these stones show signs of becoming fashionable and many therefore be considered good investments. In the souvenir category are the following: green zircons, brown tournmalines, sinhalites and spinels—all available for approximately $10 per karat. Note that U.S. Customs levies a charge of 5 per cent on semi-precious stones. 8 per cent on rubies and sapphires. Stones in settings are taxed at the rate

of 24 per cent of the price paid in Ceylon. Obviously it's wise to save receipts.

DeGaulle raises Jewish ire By PHIL NEWSOM When President Charles de Gaulle described Jews as an “elite people, sure of itself and domineering,” he stirred fear among 500.000 French Jews and earned the further gratitude of the Arabs. The Jew^s feared a rise in anti-

semitism, apparently with De Gaulle’s blessing. For the Arabs it was another mark of affection from De Gaulle who in Cairo, Damascus and Baghdad has become the Arab hero-image of the West. Since De Gaulle made the remark at one of his staged press conferences, it could not be considered off-the-cuff. Nor could it be considered in the same category as other Gaullist gestures toward the French Canadians as a language group, toward South Americans as Latins or attempts to take i advantage of anti-Americanism

in Cambodia and Red China. For to this one had been added another ingredient—oil. For this De Gaulle w'as walling to override the pro-Israel sentiments of the French people, to ignore French promises of support to Israel in the event that Egypt tried to close the Gulf of Aqaba and to switch from a traditional supplier of arms to Israel to a similar role among the Arabs. The result has been fulsomo praise in the Arab press and a parade of Arab delegations to Paris.
