NEW YORK UPI — European fashion designers are having such an important influence on American men’s wear that Bill Aliller feels his own designs are only about four years ahead of the market. Otherwise, he says, he would put it at eight years. Aliller probably has won more fashion awards for men’s wear than anybody in the business — around 20 — and one shelf in his main shop, the Village Squire in New York’s Greenwich Village, is lined with trophies. Long before Carnaby Street was heard of in America Bill Aliller was making hipster slacks and the six button double breasted Edwardian jackets that later became known as “ATod.” That is well behind him now and he is dipping far into the future.

Aliller joined his father in the women’s knitwear business, tired of that and entered the men’s wear field with Frank Lawrence, as business manager. His innovations have included a corduroy jump suit worn with a sports coats, an LBJ sports shirt with attached cowboy style neckerchief, paisley corduroy swimsuits, the first “bottomless” bathing suit (Gstrings fore and aft), evening wear in gray hopsacking, black corduroy and black antelope. Big manufacturers fr o m throughout the United States make regular pilgrimages to West 8th Street where Aliller has two nearby stores to lift a few ideas for clothes of their own. So does an occasional rival designer. What’s New Here are some of his far

ahead fashions for Spring and Fall 1968: Sports Jacket: A three-but-ton French all wool coarse hopsacking beige with a 3-inch brown windowpane cheek. The three buttons fasten high on the chest and a deep box pleat gives the jacket skirt lots of flare. A Blazer; This blazer can double as a formal jacket. It is double breasted but only one row of buttons button on the outside, and off center. The fabric is a diagonal wool which looks like cable stitch in a sweater, and with three selfcovered buttons. There are very wide short lapels, and one breast pocket outside, four more inside. The sleeves have open vents. Tailcoat: This is modified for sports wear or as a sports suit. The fabric is brown and beige

window pane with two self-co-vered buttons and the pants ; have a bit of flare at the cuff to cope with the new higher rising shoes. Sports jacket: This is a mohair and wool jacket in such a loose weave it appears to be handwoven and is in yellow, shades of brown and white. It is hip length with a fly front, crew neck and vertical semiinvisible slash pockets. Could be worn for skiing, golf or what have you. Sports Jacket: An enormous hounds tooth in an Edwardian look, hip length. Since men are accepting more color Aliller brought it to a peak in shades of orange and brown. It is fitted. flared with a coachman’s collar and fastens high on the chest. Forward side box pleats increase the flair. Sports Jacket: Hounds tooth in a 3B high buttoning and

with a zippered back vent that can be opened all the way to

the collar

At Home Formal: A wrap aroundcoat in a i length with no buttons, fastening with a belt that ties. It is in black worsted tropical with a grosgrain shawl collar and could double as an evening top coat. At home it would be worn with tuxedo pants and probably a turtle neck formal sweater. Tuxedo: A doublebreasted that fastens on one side only, slightly off center. It has a grosgrain body and a tropical shawl collar. It is long (SO 1 ^ inches) with a deep pleat in

the back.

Suit: Very coarse cavalry twill with off center DB fastening, and front vents to make the pockets more accessible. Wide coachman’s lapel and plain back with West Point 1

contour seams. In chocolat#

brown.

Suit: A 4B close set high double breasted in light brown herring bone tweed with two almost vertical slash pockets and two unpressed side vents for additional flair. Pants bottoms have a slight flair.
