Muskies beat Buccaneers; Pacers down Kentucky
By United Press International The Minnesota Muskies and the Indiana Pacers think there’s nothing like Southern hospitality to make them happy in the American Basketball Association. The two top teams in the Eastern Division of the ABA played in the South Wednesday night and both came away with victories. The Muskies defeated the New Orleans Buccaneers 119-113 at New Orleans while the Pacers downed the Kentucky Colonels 100-97 at Louisville. The Muskies retained their half-game lead over the Pacers with a 21-15 burst in overtime. Mel Daniels’ tip-in gave the Muskies their go-ahead basket and he wound up with 34 points. Jim Jones led the Buccaneers With 28 points. A field goal by Bob Netolicky and Roger Brown’s two free throws in overtime brought the Pacers’ fourth consecutive win over the Colonels. Netolicky led a parade of five Indiana players in double figures with 26 points. The Anaheim Amigos built up a 58-45 lead and then coasted to
a 124-100 win over the Houston Mavericks in the only other game. Ben Warley led the Amigos with 30 points, including the four three-point goals, while DeWitt Maynard had 19 for the Mavericks. Wesleyan at DPU Friday
Undefeated Illinois Wesleyan comes to Greencastle tomorrow night to tackle DePauw University’s 0-2 Tigers at 8 p.m. in Bowman Gymnasium. The game will be Wesleyan’s second after an opening 87-85 (victory last Saturday at Aug- ; ustana College. The five likely to launch the Titans’ attack against the ! Tigers are 6-3 forward Bob Scranton; forward and captain Dennis Kagel, a 6-4 junior; 6-2 center Sheldon Thompson, a freshman; and guards Tom Gramkow, 5-11, and Dave Mc-
Millan, 6-1.
Kagel appears to be the big man is Wesleyan’s attack that has perennially produced
the champion of the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin. He sank 12 of 24 field goal attempts in the Augustana game that Wesleyan almost booted after having built up a 62-42 lead. Wesleyan coach Dennis Bridges grouped Kagel’s heady work with that of Hal Graff in a reserve guard role and the rebounding of Sheldon Thompson as Augustana highlights. Graff came on midway in the first half and played the rest of the game. “Hal got 11 of his 15 points in the last half, but I was really impressed by the way he set up baskets with (Continued on Page 7)
By FRANK PUCKETT JR. Banner Sports Editor Nine games are on tap for tomorrow and Saturday night for the Putnam County prepsters with Greencastle and Bainbridge playing both nights. The Tiger Cubs, fresh from a rousing 29-point victory over previously undefeated Martinsville, will play host to Western Indiana Conference leader and undefeated Clinton in the uptown gymnasium Friday night and then travel to Rockville for another tussle with the unblemished Rox. Clinton, led by versatile 6-8
pivotman Keith Williams, clob-1 bered Brazil Tuesday night and brought their record to 4-0 overall and 3-0 In the loop. Williams single-handedly took care of that one by snuffing out a \ fourth quarter Red Devil rally I by tucking away ten points. He was assisted by potent Wild- j cat scorer Jim Virotsko who finished the game with 22 points. Williams pulled off 15 rebounds. They have beaten Schulte, State High. Van Buren, and Brazil. The game will be the second in the conference for the Cubs who are 1-0. Rockville could cause the
Tiger Cubs trouble with their high scoring antics and 6-7 center Bill Newton. Newton had a 15.5 per game average last year and so far this year has collected 19.7 per game. He is one of four returning lettermen; who form the nucleaus of fifth year coach Don Smith’s team. The other boys, 6-4 Jim Crosley, 6-3 Steve Rankin, and 6-1 Steve Jeffries, all average in double figures. Bainbridge, standing 5-1 with a loss to Cloverdale, hosts Pitts-: boro Friday night and then j hits the road Saturday night for Ladoga where they are
Evansville North clings to top in initial UPI coaches' ratings
INDIANAPOLIS UPI —The season’s initial UPI Indiana high school basketball coaches’ board ratings had a distinct “southern touch” Wednesday with state champion Evansville North, Columbus and Southport occupying the top three berths. The panel of experts stuck with North, surprise winner of the Hoosier Madness last March presumably on the theory the champ should stay at the head of the class until proved otherwise. Coach Jim Rausch’s Huskies won their first two games from Mount Vernon and Fort Branch but run into considerably stiffen opposition this weekendagalnst Tell City and fellow “Big 10” member Vincennes. North polled 7 of 8 first-place votes for a total of 137 points out of a possible 180 in balloting for games through last Saturday. Last February North took the No. 10 rating into the four-week state tourney. Columbus Close Behind Columbus, winner of its first four games, including an 84-81 thriller at strong Shelbyville, trailed by just nine votes in

The Cards are 4-2 for the season with losses to Cloverdale and Bainbridge in their first two outings. They dumped Van Buren, Granville Wells, Roachdale, and Danville. Russellville, carrying hopes of getting back on the winning side of things after losing two in a row, wall travel to Scotland, Illinois, Friday night.
