While it is true that in duplicate bridge tho element of luck ordinarily plays only a minor role, there are nonethelees hands where luck is the dominant fantor and skill is only of secon-

dary importance.

For example, consider this

FG FT PF hand which occurred in the

match between Great Britain and the United States in 1962. The British North-South pair arrived at seven spades, and

grand slam was essentially a matter of luck. West led a diamond, won In dummy with the queen, and detc im. xfc

.clarer played the aoo and *n» 'other spade, finessing the jaclt West won with the queen, re* turned a diamond, and the re* suit was that South went down

two.

Had the East-West cards be« distributed a little differently, i or had South been sufficiently inspired to guess the doubleton queen of spades, he would have made the grand slam and scored 2.210 points instead of going minus 200 points. Of course, seven spades was a shaky contract and should nol have been reached, but all of uf have seen many worse contracts in our time. When the American pair al the second table held the North* South cards, the bidding went:

East Pass Pass Pass Pass

Again a diamond was led and taken with the queen. But be* cause declarer was only in six, he immediately cashed the A-K of spades to protect against a possible diamond ruff. When the queen unexpectedly fell, he continued with the jack and easily made seven for a score of 1.460 points. So the outcome was that the American team gained 1,660 points on this one deal, the largest single gain made by either team in the entire 144board match.
