Transform dull objects through art of color
If your holiday decorating funds are limited, there are easy, effective ways to add extra Christmas beauty and still maintain the budget. The secret is in spending a minor amount to effect a major change in the appearance of a room. The secret is also in using color in small amounts to erase the overall winter drabness of a home. One of the practical beauty tips suggested by a design expert for Rez antiquing and stain colors is to spend five dollars to buy a new piece of furniture. There is no catch. The five dollars buys color to apply to an old or tired piece of furniture to transform it into a decorative room highlight that picks up the interest of its surroundings. Leftover antiquing colors won’t go to waste. If you choose a soft antique blue that reflects the Colonial era of elegance for a handsome but outmoded chest, use the leftover paint to apply to inexpensive candles that can be purchased for pennies in your variety store. In several antiquing kits available today, a tube of gold paint is included which can be applied as a candle trim and as a smart coverup for unappealing candle holders. If you decide to reawake the beauty of a scratch table by adding a fresh wood stain, use the leftover stain for plain pariffin candles you make or buy to simulate Christmas logs. The Rez people suggest scoring the candles with a hot nail be-
fore the stain is applied to give it a genuine rough-textured “cedar log” appearance. Then wipe on wood stain. After stain has dried, burn the “scores” into the candle. For a fir or spruce log, use a green stain. Tack on a touch of holly, a wood sprite, an ornament. Arrange as logs in a circle of holly or other greens and you have created a Christmas hearth for the center of your holiday table. The holiday season stimulates a woman to do the decorative extras that can become an important part of a room's decor the year around. AH predictions seem to indicate that antiqued furniture will come on stronger than ever in the New Year. So choose the antique blues, reds, violets, greens and other mellowed finishes that will spark the decor for seasons to come. With the new two-step antiquing process, a large table or chest can be antiqued in a day. Use the leftover paints and stains to create coordinated and unusual candle colors that reflect your artistic and economic approach to a happy holiday. Juvenile cards strike a musical note. For the children on your Christmas list there is a charming collection called “Sing a Song of Christmas” from Norcross Inc. Young musicians are delicately illustrated both front and back and strung on golden cords. Perfect for home display since they can ba hung on the tree.
