Seasonal art on walls helps create magic

Decorating the home for the Christmas season has become quite an art. It often follows many family traditions, but each year, imaginative homemakers look for new ways to decorate and unusual uses for the family’s favorite Christmas ornaments. This year, why not surround your family with the holiday spirit from packages under the tree and mistletoe overhead to seasonal art on the walls. The Picture and Frame Institute suggests letting Christmas stories tell themselves on your walls. Wherever you have frame pictures, replace the picture with a scene appropriate to the season. Christmas is the special time of year when pictures of religious events, particularly those representing the story of the birth of Christ, are appropriate almost anywhere in the home. The choice of Christmas season pictures range from religious scenes to illustrations of stories such as Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol” to contemporary designs or the ever popular Currier & Ives winter scenes. Your choice of seasonal pictures reflecting your tastes and your home furnishings, will create an original and appeal-

ing addition to your holiday decorations. The warmth of the Christmas spirit will literally surround you when art becomes part of the “art” of Christmas.

Make a petticoat for your tree Rather than using cotton to cover the base of your tree this year, why not plan to make a gay petticoat. These can be made quickly with felt and a pair of pinking shears. Cut a hole in the middle and slash from outer edge to fit around tree trunk. Scallop with pinking shears and decorate to your taste. It’s a labor saver too as it will catch needles and can be easily removed and dumped to make cleaning easier.

TO DISPLAY CARDS To hang cards from wall to ceiling without marring-tack a piece of cellophane tape (sticky side out) to the molding and baseboard. Just press the back of each card, as you receive them, to the tape. To keep the front pages of book-fashion cards in place, slant the top of the card a little.
