Pacers beat Oakland 119-110; at home against Pittsburgh tonight
INDIANAPOLIS UPI — The Indiana Pacers, still unbeaten at home after a 119-110 American Basketball Association victory over Oakland Wednesday night, play host to Pittsburgh tonight for their fifth game in sLx nights. The ABA eastern division leaders built up a 24-point lead by late in the third period Wednesday night and then withstood a fourth-period Oakland rally paced by league scoring leader Levern Tart. With the Oaks trailing 84-60, , Tart, who had scored only six points, hit six within 51 seconds and then collected 13 more in the final period to take scor-
ing honors for the night with 25. The Oaks outshot the Pacers from the field, 93-82, but the Pacers made good on 37 of 47 free throws while Oakland connected on 17 of 29. Oliver Darden led the Pacers with 22 points while Fred Lewis scored 20 and Jimmy Rayl 19. Andy Anderson had 18 for Oakland. Coach Mel Nowell made his best decision of the game Wednesday night when he decided to put player Mel Nowell into the New Jersey Americans’ lineup. The defect, obviously, was my failure to mention that the fellow who mixes martinis in a butter churn takes the butter out first. I deeply regret this oversight and all the trouble it may have caused. And for further reference, let me set the record
straight.
If ever you feel inclined to try the experiment described by McHale, be sure to use melted but-

By DICK WEST WASHINGTON UPI—A few days ago I proposed that the automobile industry’s practice of calling back cars for correction of defects be extended to other types of goods and serv-
ices.
Thus far there has been no discernible movement towards bringing this about. So I thought it might help get the ball rolling if I set an example by calling back one of the columns I wrote last spring. It was a piece about a man who mixes martini cocktails in a butter churn. Probably you don’t remember it. I didn’t remember it either until it was called to my attention by Terry McHale of the Flint, Mich., Journal, who says he has discovered what may be
serious defect.
It happened while McHale was on a vacation trip in Wisconsin. One evening he dropped into a tavern and overheard a conversation between the barmaid and a couple of other patrons. “Seems the evening before had been a good one, with a

“The barmaid was dubious but being eager to please she gave it a try, following the directions of the experimentive customer, j She started in the usual way, I pouring gin and vermouth in the proper amounts over ice. Then she dropped in a pat of butter and stirred vigorously, j “As could be expected, the

INDIANAPOLIS UPI — The Indiana Collegiate Conference today opened a two-day fall meeting which was expected to result in the disbanding of the athletic league as it is now constituted. Ball State announced at the spring meeting at Lafayette that it would withdraw from the seven-school league at this meeting and Indiana State, the other big, state-supported member school, indicated it would follow suit. The action had been expected for some time as the enrollments of the two state schools surpassed those of the smaller private schools- Butler, Evansville, St. Joseph’s, Valparaiso and DePauw. Today’s agenda was devoted to separate meetings of athletic directors and faculty representatives and no formal action on withdrawal was expected before Friday’s closing session of the meeting. The ICC has had Internal problems for almost two years because of the difference in size of the athletic programs of the larger and smaller schools. De-
Rouse-Tiger meet in 15-rounder LAS VEGAS, Nev. LTPI — Roger Rouse, a little known commodity who lives in a far off place named Opportunity, Mont., gets his big chance Friday night. And he says he doesn’t Intend to let the chance slip away. Rouse will meet light heavyweight champion Dick Tiger of Nigeria in a 15-round fight at the Las Vegas Convention Cen-
ter.
“I've been chasing three champions (Willie Pastrano, Jose Torres and Tiger) and I don’t intend to blow the opportunity,” the hard - punching Montana fighter promises. The 32-year-old challenger has had only one of his 38 bouts in the East, a six-round loss to Babe Simmons in New York City in 1960. Most of Rouse’s fights have been in Montana, Oregon and northern California.
Pauw, Valparaiso and St. Joseph’s all had talked about leaving the conference because they did not feel they could compete in football with Ball State and j Indiana State. At a meeting last December, conference officials voted to permit DePauw and Valparaiso to remain in the ICC without being j contenders for the football championship. After 1968, the 1 two planned to play only the smaller ICC members without scheduling Ball State and Indiana State. In its informal notice of withdrawal last spring. Ball State said it would honor all schedule commitments with other ICC members. Conference football schedules are drawn up through the 1968 season.
manager-coach Max Zaslofsky was ejected in the third period, put himself into the lineup in the fourth period when the New Orleans Bucs were leading the Americans by 10 points. All Nowell did was score 10 points in the fourth period, including a 30-foot, three-point field goal that tied the game with three seconds left and then guide the Americans to a 123-114 American Basketball Association overtime victory. The 27-year-old Nowell is a former Ohio State backcourt star who played on the same team with Jerry Lucas and John Havlicek. Oliver Darden scored 22 points, Fred Lewis 20 and Jimmy Rayl 19 to lead the Pacers while Lavern Tart, the ABA’s scoring leader, had 25 for the Oaks. Les Selvage scored 24 points and Bob Bedell had 20 as the Amigos scored their fifth victory of the season. John Beasley had 26 and Bob Verga 25 for the Chaps. ABA Standings East W. L. Pet.
