Harkness' 92-foot fling gives Pacers 119-118 win over Dallas
By United Press International Jerry Harkness, a former Loyola of Chicago All America who failed in a previous professional try, laid claim today to the longest field goal in pro basketball history. The shot—a 92-foot heave which travelled the length of the court—was a three-point field goal that gave the Indiana Pacers a 119-118 American • Basketball Association victory over the Dallas Chaparrals Monday night. The shot came one second after a short jump shot by John Beasley gave the Chaps a 118-116 lead.
. Harkness, who didn’t make it in a previous pro trial with the New York Knickerbockers of the National Basketball Asso- , ciation, got his chance when time was called after Beasley’s goal. The ball was passed in to him and he cut loose with the desperation shot which gave the Pasers their 12th victory in 15 games and enabled them to open up a 3^-game lead in the Eastern Division of the ABA. Guard Fred Lewis was highscorer for the Pacers with 26 points while Bob Verga and player-coach Cliff Hagan led the Chaps with 30 points each.
Hull reaches for 400 mark
NEW YORK UPI — Bobby Hull is moving at a goal-a-game pace in his quest for No. 400. At the present rate, Hull could reach that figure by Dec. 16. The Chicago Black Hawk left winger scored three goals for the week ending Sunday to raise his National Hockey League goal total to 384. Hull’s 14 goals and seven as'sists this season put him three points ahead of Detroit’s Gordie Howe, who sets an NHL record every time he scores. Howe is

Two veteran NHL players performing for expansion clubs are tied for fifth place as Andy Bathgate of Pittsburgh and Bill Hicke of Oakland show eight goals and seven assists for the season.

One to go and "Rose Bowl Here We Come!" for Indiana's Hoosiers

By United Presi International It was one to go and “Rose Bowl, Here We Come!” Monday for Indiana's amazing football Hoos'ers, who are rapidly making believers of the last skeptics. Even the most optimistic backers of the Hoosiers didn't figure in pre-season speculation they would do better than 7-3. Now, with two games to go, the boys from Bloomington were 8-0—one of just two major unbeaten and untied college clubs left in the country. “Sure, we're surprised,” said coach Johnny Pont, who observed his 40th birthday anniversary Monday, “but I thought we would be playing w r ell this year. “You always dream of things like the Rose Bowl because that’s the object of the game.” Forgotten were the lategame heroics of halfback John Isenbarger and Dave Kornowa’s conversation that gave IU
1 a 14-13 victory at Michigan [ State last Saturday—Minnesota was the next target, the ! Hoosiers’ final road game of i the season. Even should they j lose, they could still get the Rose Bowl bid with an upset victory over intrastate arch rival Purdue in the season finale next week.

Greencastle’s varsity basketball team will display some of their potential to bleacher seat coaches Wednesday evening in the uptown gymnasium when coach Dave McCracken will turn his basketball candidates loose for a pre-game scrimmage. The tilt is scheduled to start at 6:00 p. m. As an added attraction to fans, the senior football players, who have just finished another good season, will match buckets with the high school faculty. The faculty team will include attractions such as athletic director Lloyd Cooper, football coach Bob Bergman, baseball coach Steve Pequin, assistant coach Jim McCammon,
basketball coach Dave McCracken and others. The public is invited to the hardwood highlight and proceeds will go to the Greencastle GClub. Season tickets for the regular schedule of games will be sold at the games.
“Minnesota will be sky-high for us,” said Pont. “It’s going to be a case of their siza against our quickness.” The Gophers were mauled at Purdue last Saturday, 41-12. Powerful Purdue can’t go to the Rose Bowl since it played there the last time, but the Ri- ; veters are shooting not only for the Big Ten crown but for the national title as well. Their only loss in eight games was a 22-14 mid-season upset to intersectional rival Oregon State, giant-killer of Southern California last weekend. Purdue, tied with III for first place in the Big Ten, is home to Michigan State this week. Notre Dame, the other member of the state's "Big Three,” is at Georgia Tech. Ten teams closed their seasons last Saturday and the others, except the "Big Three” and Indiana State, ring down the curtain this weekend.
LONDON VICTOR LIVERPOOL, England UPI — Brian London, the former Brit- i ish heavyweight champion, j scored a 10-round decision over Zola Folley of Chandler, Ariz., Monday night. It was only the ninth defeat in 87 fights for Folley, who lost to Cassius Clay in a bid for the world heaveyweight title last March.
JOHNNY ON SPOT—Indiana s chances for a Big Ten title get the real test this weekend when the Hoosiers, coached by Johnny Pont (above), take on Minnesota and then, in the finale, Purdue. Pont is a former coach at Yale and Miami U. of Ohio.
