TELEVISION IN REVIEW

By RICK DUBROW HOLLYWOOD UPI—Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz, television’s most popular duo when married, have gone their separate ways —but their shrewd, individual understanding of audiences is on display again. Miss Ball, who keeps on going year after year in her series, came in No. 1 in the latest national video ratings. Arnaz, meanwhile, after leaving television, has come back as boss of a new NBC-TV comedy series, “The Mothers-in-law,’’ and it is currently also doing quite well in the ratings. The fact that “The Mothers-in-law’’ is holding up statistically is something of a wonder, considering that it is opposite two other strongly-rated series, the Ed Sullivan Show and "The FBI.” This particular time slot —8:30 to 9 p.m. EST on Sundays — has been murder on NBC-TV’s programmers, and the Arnaz series seems to be the solution for the network. It is hardly a sophisticated show, or even a semi-sophisti-cated one. And despite the presence of Eve Arden and Kaye Ballard as the neighboring mothers-in-law, it is basically an old-fashioned series, with a lot of noise and frantic goings-on. Yet, according to reports before the season began, this is precisely what Arnaz argued the time slot needed to hold the audience. Perhaps it is little surprise, then, that many of the devices

employed in “The Mothers-in-law” are reminiscent of the enormously popular “I Love Lucy” show of Miss Ball and Arnaz. The latest ratings are, in fact, quite reminiscent of old times. Although six movies finished among the top 14 programs, the No. 2 show behind Miss Ball was “Bonanza.” It now is a widely accepted premise that big-name, old-line television stars are among the few weapons a series can employ to compete successfully with motion pictures. The ratings, meanwhile, continue also to cut down various series. As expected, ABC-TV has canceled “Good Company,” the celebrity interview show with attorney F. Lee Bailey as host, and “Custer,” a Western. “Good Company” bows out Dec. 21, and "Custer’s” last stand is Jan. 3. One ABC-TV substitute, beginning Jan. 9, is a series called “It Takes a Thief,” with Robert Wagner as a smooth thief who is “paroled into the custody of a top-secret government intelligence agency to undertake assignments which need his special talents.” In addition, the network will once again bring back the tongue-in-cheek British mystery series “The Avengers” as a midseason replacement. And starting Jan. 13, “The Hollywood Palace,” a variety show that was very popular until switched to Tuesday nights this season, will be returned to Saturdays.

Winter weather grips nation

By United Pr**» International Snow fell for the fourth consecutive day today in sections of the Great Lakes. Raw winter weather continued to grip much of the nation. Five inches of snow lay In Sault Ste. Marie, Mich., early today. Seven inches of snow piled up in Buffalo, N.Y., which escaped a weekend storm that covered the western part of the state with up to 32 inches. Snow mounted near the 40Inch mark in Conneaut, Ohio, a state burdened in some parts with up to two feet of white. In Ashtabula, Ohio, which measured 27 inches of snow by Monday night, schools and roads were closed. Blizzard conditions were reported Monday night in parts of Michigan’s upper peninsula,

where two feet of snow was recorded. In the Southwest, which has felt the sting of the precocious winter, hazardous driving warnings were issued for the higher mountains of southern New Mexico. Snow piled up on roads made driving treacherous over the southwest and south central New Mexico mountains. Light rain fell eastward today from southern New Mexico across western and southern Texas and along the northern Pacific slope. Clear skies prevailed over most of the rest of the nation’s western half, across the southeastern states and northward along the East Coast. The mercury dipped to 12 at Lander and Laramie, Wyo., before dawn today and rose to 71 at Key West, Fla.
