Book memorial to Dean Dirks
The Greencastle - Putnam County Public Library has received the book, “Children in the White House,’* by Christine Sadler. This book was presented to the Library by the Fortnightly Club, in memory of Dean Louis Dirks.
The author, Mrs. Sadler, has been a Washington editor of McCall’s Magazine for more than 20 years. She has written a popular, lively human book j with interest and enthusiasm. The book opens with Martha Washington and her grandchildren and ends with Luci and Lynda Johnson.
JAYCEES LEARN ABOUT FLUORIDATION—The Greencastle Jaycees decided to get an education about fluoridation in Indiana and thus invited Dr. Jack Mollenkopf, a public health dentist of the division of Dental Health of the state, to one of their meetings. Mollenkopf accepted and was present at Monday night's meeting along with representatives of the League of Women Voters, DePauw University, and the Putnam County Dental Association, and the Putnam County Medical Association. He is shown above pictured with Dr. J. D. Shonkwiler, a local physician, and Don Barnes, Jaycee president.
Compulsory education sets destiny
The book will furnish lively and informative reading for everyone Interested in the WTiite House. There are many amusing, poignant stories, dramatic scenes and episodes of historic interest. In one way these studies of White House children and of the President and First Ladies as parents and grandparents present a unique form of American history from the Revolution to the present time.
James Russell Lowell, writing in the mid-nineteenth century, said, “It was in making education not only common to all, but in some sense compulsory to all, that the destiny of the free republic of America was practically settled.” This country's philosophy | and the great driving force of education has been to bring out the best in the greatest number of people. And bringing out the best in more than 56 million

students requires quality education superior to any the world has yet known. To celebrate the efforts of American public schools in the great adventure, Greencastle will open its school doors for parental inspection during American Education Week, November 5-11. This year's annual event has as its theme “How Good Are Your Schools?” “Good schools are vital today,” Dr. Rammel observed. Good schools help shape the character of youth, provide learning opportunities for all, meet the challenge of change, provide quality teaching, stimulate life-long learning, develop vocational competence, and enrich human life. Today’s teacher—youthful, politically active, intellectually vigorous—is giving our nation’s children the best education possible. Education, like any great profession, will continue to grow and adapt itself to the massive changes that occur daily in every facet of our society. Greencastle Community Schools exhibit some of the up-to-date teaching methods being
used to prepare young people to meet these changes. Every parent in this community has the right and privilege of visiting their Greencastle Community Schools to witness the many facets of teaching methodology. “Visit your school during AEW,” Dr. Rammel urges. “A dedicated staff of professional teachers and an informer body of parents and concerned citizenry will assure the best education possible.”
The author has done extensive research through biographies, historical works, newspapers and diaries in preparation for this book.
A number of portrait-repro-ductions o f photographs and paintings add to the enjoyment of the book.

INDIANAPOLIS UPI — The Indiana Traffic Safety Council says Indiana churches have been asked to give their support to a special year-end traffic safety program beginning Nov. 23 and continuing through the Christmas-New Year’s holidays.
The council is distributing program planning guides to about 5,000 Hoosier ministers urging them to call attention to the accident problem and “to devote class and group meetings to the subject of highway safety.”

MOUNT HOLLY, N. J. UPI— Residents of nearby Eastanton Township, though appreciative of the federal government's paying half of a $2,000 bill for a new siren, have asked the town fathers to remove it. Residents are tired of counting the fog-horn type blasts — five for fires and seven for emergencies.
