Lawyer sues Clay; Clay can't pay
r
HOUSTON UPI — Cassius! while his case is on appeal.
Clay’s former lawyer Hayden;
Covington, sued the former heavyweight champion for $284,615 Monday, complaining he has never gotten his share of the purse in the bout between .Clay and his draft board. Clay took the count after refusing to take the symbolic step forward and be inducted into the U. S. Army last April. He was fined 100,000 and sentenced to five years in prison and is now free on $5,000 bond
The conviction last June is now before the U. S. 5th Circuit Court of Appeals in New Or-
leans.
“I’ve got a lot of bills that are due,” Clay said. "And that 1 can’t pay. The government won’t let me leave the country, so I can get some money.” Clay asked a federal court last August to let him leave the country for a series of fights in Japan. The court refused permission.

By United Press International Despite the fact Purdue can’t go to the Rose Bowl, this could easily be the most exciting college football season for both the Boilermakers and Indiana’s up-and-coming Hoosiers. It’s been just that up to now, with no indication of an abrupt | change. By bombing Ohio State Into submission, 41-6, Purdue lived ; up to its No, 2 national press | notices—the worst beating the Woody Hayes-coached Buckeyes have ever absorbed. By coming from behind in the final minute to edge Iowa in a 21-17 cliffhanger, Indiana not only kept pace with the Riveters as the lone perfect crews in the Hoosier state, but remained at the head of the class in the Big Ten. Indiana shoots for its third consecutive conference win at

(Michigan Saturday while Purdue entertains intersectional rival Oregon State and Notre Dame travels to Illinois. Hanover at Taylor tops Saturday’s Hoosier College Conference program. Hanover is the lone member left still unbeaten and untied in league play while Taylor might be “loaded for bear” as a result of its 9-7 upset loss to Indiana Central last weekend. The setback wrecked Taylor’s bid to tie Hanover for the league lead. Anderson is at Manchester and Franklin at Indiana Central in other HCC encounters. Evansville gets a crack at Indiana State’s perfect record in the Indiana Collegiate Conference Saturday while Ball State, the other co-leader, should have a considerably easier time at home against Butler, a winner only once so far this fall. St. Joseph’s is at Valparaiso In the other ICC scrap. The weekend schedule is rounded out with DePauw at Earlham. Ohio Wesleyan at Wabash and Rose Poly at Central Methodist.
Cliff Hagan gets new life By United Press International There's nothing like the fledgling American Basketball Association to pump some life into an oldtimer like Cliff Hagan. The 35-year-old Hagan, who retired from the established National Basketball Association after the 1965-66 season following 10 brilliant campaigns with the St. Louis Hawks, got the Dallas Chaparrals off winging Monday night. Hagan, the player - coach, scored 25 points, 20 in the first quarter, in leading Dallas to an opening game 129-125 victory over the Anaheim Amigos. It was the Amigos’ third loss without a victory. Former Duke star Bobby Verga added 34 points and John Beasley tallied 25 for Dallas. Larry Bunce topped Anaheim with 20 points. There were no other professional basketball games scheduled Monday night.
SHUFFLE PLAYERS HOUSTON UPI — The Houston Astros brought their roster to 39 players Sunday when they asked waivers on veteran infielder Bob Lillis for the purpose of giving him his unconditional release and added pitch- ! ers Scipio Spinks, Wayne Twiti chell and Bob Watkins to the roster.
