By RICK DU BROW HOLLYWOOD UPI — It’s really not to difficult to put on a Barbra Streisand television special. That is, it shouldn’t be. All you do is train a camera on her and go away until she’s finished. You shouldn’t think about it too much. You have probably the greatest natural popular performer the nation has produced. You don’t need the gimmicks of ordinary stars. You’d think this would be known by now. Her first two video specials, in which she was up there all alone on the screen, were show business landmarks. She immediately became not merely a talent but a natural resource. It beats the devil out of me, therefore, to figure out why, in her latest hour CBS-TV special Wednesday night, it was deemed necessary to throw her into yet another nostalgic show about oldtime American vaudeville, and surround her with a cast that took away her time on screen. It’s tough enough to wait a whole year for a Streisand special, but then to be deprived of her for part of the hour is annoying in the extreme. Jason Robards, John Bubbles and some other people were on hand to divvy up the numbers, and while they are certainly professionals they didn’t do much that hadn’t been seen before. In short, the hour quickly began to look like a lot of other specials — okay for other stars, but definitely not in the Streisand league. Suddenly everything began to look as if it

were a lot of work for the principals involved - - the Streisand bobbly was missing, the exuberance canned, the talent smothered. Suddenly, also, there was a lot of the trivial kind of patter that Streisand hours have avoided, properly, like the plague. An attempt was made to be campy throughout, but mainly it was just a severe case of the cutes. There was too much restraint, too much posing. Nobody, including Miss Streisand, seemed to be reaching back for that extra special something that goes with cool free-wheel-ing. The thrilling Streisand big notes were hard to find. Alas, even her voice seemed to lack the usual inspiration. All right, now. Let’s get to the heart of the matter. Miss Streisand did indeed prove she can do everything — but she proved that before. When you have a star of her magnitude, it is beneath her to spend most of her time imitating — or even putting on — stars and other types of performers who are, and were, obviously her inferiors. When you have a great lady like a Streisand, and you have her for only an hour a year on television, you don’t burden her with the trivia others need. You leave her alone to do, alone, what she does incomparably — sing, clown, goof around, be herself. She was alone up there for the last third of the show, but by then the magic was long gone. I still love you, Barbra, but oh you kid.
