IVTOEL COWARD’S blessed ability to laugh at himself was J. ’ demonstrated anew when his publisher, Doubleday, beseeched him to make a series of personal appearances in behalf of his new book, “Suite in Three Keys.” "But what will I be expected to do in these appearances?’* asked Coward. “Simply act yourself/* he was told. “Oh,” grimaced Coward. “That ratten rale again!” a • • A young psychiatrist, serving his apprenticeship in a huge, ill-equipped state mental institution, fell madly in love with a curvaceous blonde nurse, and proposed matrimony. She stalled for time, however, telling him coyly. “Not yet, my Loch invar. But come around again when you know hew to own your mind business.’' * • * Qinemmat Jack Bradford knows a widower who’s marrying: his late wife’a sister. He doesn't want the nuisance of breaking in a new mother-in-law. A convict serving a life-sentence in a Wyoming jail writes a weekly column for the prison newspaper. He calls it “Here Today, Here Tomorrow.” The town eccentric has bought an old double-decker bus te go to drive-in movies. "X like,” he explains, “to sit in the balcony.** Sign on an interurban bus in cannibal country: “Take this bus and leave the driver to us.” O 196T, by Bennett Cert. NEW GUARD WARFIELD. England UPI — The vicar of Warfield can sleep easy these nights, confident that there are no bats in his belfry. The Rev. Fergus Trevor was concerned when vandals stole the stuffed owl he had been using to frighten bats away from the steeple of the parish church. Tuesday he was happy— the British Air Force Association had given him a new stuffed owl.

The first completely automatic landing of a plane in history was made at Wright Field, Ohio, Aug. 23, 1937.
