At its recent convention in Seattle, the Episcopal Church decided to donate $9 million over the next three years to secular j organizations trying to improve living conditions for minority I groups in urban ghettos. This action is indicative of a growing readiness on the part of American churches to “put their money where their mouth Is” in the matter of social action and service to humanity. The trend Is timely. During October and November, churches throughout the country will be conducting membership canvasses for financial support during the coming year. Feedback from these annual campaigns in recent years indicates that many church members are reducing their pledges, or at least refusing to increase them, because they see no point in giving sacrificially to a self-centered institution which spends most of its income on its own mainte-
nance.
Churches may decry this image as unfair. They can point out. with complete justification, that major Protestant denominations spend upwards of $700 million a year—about a fifth of their total income—to support church - related colleges, hospitals. homes for the aged, neighborhood houses, institutions for the care of children, and other “benevolences.” There are not official figures on the Catholic outlay for such public-serving institutions, but it must be quite large since American Catholics support 14,148 schools and colleges, 234 orphanages and 416 homes for the aged. All of these are things which churches have been doing for a very long time — and which would otherwise have tq be done at the taxpayers’ expense. But merely publicizing these facts is not likely to overcome the widespread apathy which churches have been encountering in their fund appeals. Ironically, churches may be getting a boomerang effect from their own preaching. A parishioner who takes seriouly what he has heard from
the pulpit in recent years about stewardship of wealth, and the Christian’s duty to combat poverty and discrimination, might reasonably conclude that it isn’t adequate for the church to pass i along to philanthropic causes: one dollar out of every five that •
it collects.
Although churches are not, and never have been, quite as; preoccupied with institutional 1 self-preservation as some critics contend, there is sound fac-; tual basis for the layman's impression that most of the money he drops into the collection plate goes to defray the overhead ex- j penses of his own parish. This doesn’t necessarily mean that parish churches are squandering money on themselves. On the contrary, many of them are j having a hard time meeting their budgets, even when they keep 80 per cent of their income for local use. The average minister still gets a salary of less than $6,000 a year, and other church employes — such as sextons and secretaries — are even more poorly paid. Pastors say that if members j w r ould give more generously, churches would be able to spend more on community service. Some members seem to be replying that they’ll give more readily when the church itself provides a better example of
stewardship.
Each view r may be sincere. And of course, either may be used as a convenient rationalizaj tion. It will be instructive to see t how Episcopalians respond to ! their church’s decision to ear-
! mark a major share of its total : national budget for a bold new kind of service to suffering hu-
manity.
