Jobless rate up
WASHINGTON UPI — The nation’s unemployment rate in September took its biggest jump in nearly five years, and the Labor Department Wednesday blamed it on an unusually large rise in the number of women seeking jobs. It said the unemployment rate rose to 4.1 per cent in September, from 3.8 per cent in August. Although the jobless rate for women was unusually i high, the rates for men and teen-agers were virtually unchanged. Arthur M. Ross, commissioner of labor statistics, told a news conference, that the sharp jump in the overall unemployment rate did not indicate any weakening in the economy. Business remains in the course of a “modest but sustained expansion,” Ross told reporters The jobless rate probably would have remained u nchanged in September if it were not for the large climb in the number of jobless women, Ross said.
It was unclear ho\|' the latest unemployment figures would effect the debate now raging over President Johnson’s proposed tax increase. According to Johnson, a tax hike is needed to prevent inflation. In another report on the economy, the Commerce Department earlier in the day announced that retail sales had edged upward in September to a new record of $26.7 billion. September sales were just a little higher than the revised August figure of $26.6 billion. July sales totaled $26.4 billion
