Letter To The Editor:

It certainly does not put one in a popular position in this day and age if you speak up for that in which you believe, but contrary to claims of proponents, many reputable scieni tific organizations and individ-

, uals oppose fluoridation.

If anyone promoting fluoridation from the medical or dental profession or from the public health department would 1 agree to an open public debate with a well qualified person who has studied fluoridation and who opposes it strongly, I am sure it could be arranged. !That way the citizens of Putnam County who use city water could really be informed. Maybe our water does contain a small portion of natural fluoride, but the fluoride to be added to our water is sodium fluoride and is a toxic poison. It is not a mineral nutrient but

a drug and an aluminum waste product. Anyone interested can visit the treatment plant for Brazil’s city water and read the signs: “Warning —do not inhale dust and do not put in feed or foodstuffs.” Yet, they are putting the same poison in the drinking water. True, people take drugs containing poisons through doctor’s prescriptions. By putting fluoride in our wtaer, the poison we would be getting would certainly not be under a dictor’s

prescription.

Dental decay is not a contagious or waterborne disease. It cannot be deduced that dental caries is a disease caused by fluoride deficiency. A main cause is defective nutrition and mineralization of teeth as well as undue consumption of refined carbohydrates, sugar and

sticky sweets.

There is clinical proof that lung cancer is connected to cigarette smoking and yet doctors are not concerned with passing laws to prevent us from making our own choice as to whether to smoke or not. On the other hand, I am sure that : no one has died from tooth de- ! cay and yet the proponents are in favor of forcing us to drink fluoridated water. This is ! against our American way of

■life.

DEAR ED.:

A traffic and parking proposal for downtown Greencastle: To start no parking on Washington St. from Bloomington St. to Indiana St. and eventually Jackson St., with the exception of the Courthouse side of Washington St. It will consist of three lanes, the center lane being a left turn lane from Bloomington to Jackson St. with the exception of the time between 3:30 and 5:00 p.m. At that time there will be two lanes of west bound traffic from Bloomington to Jackson St. which will be controlled by a switch in the police station to a special signal light at each intersection consisting of two lights, one indicating lane open for left turn on both sides of light and the other light indicating the middle lane as westbound through traffic and on the other side of it a red light. ( In other words, no left turn

from 3:30-5:00 p.m.

Along these lines there could be a switch at the fire station putting all lights on red until trucks have cleared the lights. To go along with the advanced traffic proposal the Greencastle Development Corp. has furnished two well located parking lots, one in operation and the other inexcusably not. The second should be completed now and a concrete parking garage also erected on both lots with two floors and designed for more, to be added, not only supplying present but considering into the future as the city grows and some lost business returns. Another suggestion: Let the customers shop in a shopping center atmosphere with sidewalk covering for all of the downtown area contracted by

. with- ^ city, but each merchant

paying his own share according to footage used. So, in short, with a little concrete, a little steel and a little planning, Greencastle can become a modern city overnight, with driving and shopping safety and comfort. The state will pay all of the street planning and changing, the merchants pay their share on the porches. So all the city needs to dq is erect the parking garages. Where there is a will there is a way. Let’s get out of the horse and buggy days and press forward! In lieu of some recent events and due to Greencastle’s lack of recreation (social and physical) for our present generation, kids go out and do all sorts of things for kicks. In most cases it results in destroying or stealing other people’s property. And in a lot of cases severe criminal acts are committed. But what the average child doesn't stop to realize is, if they get caught the court can only look at it as criminal intent, although it was just another way to let off frustrations of having everything handed down to them on a silver platter, nobody to teach them right from WTong, too much free time and no place to spend it, not enough love and attention at home, etc. I would like to suggest to the courts, although a criminal act has been committed, before it is treated as such, make sure there was criminal intent before exposing a child as a criminal. I would like to suggest to the kids who get these crazy ideas to think twice before you jump, because if you are doing it to please a friend or impress a crowd and they encourage it, they are not your friends, they are just playing you for a sucker. So is it worth ruining j your life for a few laughs? The same applies to smoking

drinking also.

Auto makers front weakens

SEEK REFLOAT BEIRUT UPI — The government Tuesday said it hoped to conclude an agreement this week with an American underwriting firm to refloat Beirut’s Intra Bank. The bank collapsed 12 months ago. plunging Lebanon into a financial crisis.

DETROIT UPI — The big three auto makers’ solid front against the United Auto Workers appeared to be weakening ( today as Chrysler Corp. step-! ped up its October production of 1968 models while Ford Motor Co. remained struck for the 28th day. Chrysler plans to build a record 155,000 cars this month, up 26 per cent from October 1966. General Motors Corp., while holding to its original production schedule for the month, reportedly was considering increases in production. Before the strike against Ford began Sept. 6, all three auto companies said they would hold to their original production schedules and not take advantage of a strike against one company. Chrysler Tuesday repo i its September sales were 14 percent above those of the same month last year. Similar high sales reports were made by Ford and GM. Ford’s sales for the last 10

days of September were the third highest in history for the period. Ford dealers introduced 1 their 196: models Sept. 22. More than two hours of ne-, gotiations at Ford Tuesday produced the usual progress report: none.

TO BOYCOTT QUEEN VALETTA, Malta UPI — Opposition leader Don Mintoff Tuesday said his Labor Party would boycott the visit of British Queen Elizabeth II next month because the government had invited her to divert attention from a severe economic crisis.

Many drugs that were presumed to be safe and even enjoyed widespread popularity have later been found to be extremely toxic. The effects of thalidomide is probably one of the most widely publicized. This drug was approved for clinical trials and had been “tested” for a number of years in the U.S. . . . ultimately by

over 1,200 physicians .

out the appearance of a single serious side effect before Its alarming crippling effects became evident... and then only from observations reported by

physicians from Europe. Citizens in another city of

Indiana, in asking dentists and doctors if any of them would give them a written guarantee that drinking fluoridated water would be harmless, were given this reply, “We would have to know each person’s physical make-up.” Yet, they insist that they are still in favor of putting it in drinking water with no way to check each person’s {physical make-up or no way of controlling how much fluoride each person wll be obtaining.

I Here are some quotes:

Law Dept., American Medical Association 9/7/61—“The American Medical Association does not engage in the approval, endorsement, guarantee or acceptance of u n f 1 u o r idated water or fluoridated water.” Dr. Charles Gordon Heyd (M.D.), Past President American Medical Association—“I am appalled at the prospect of using water as a vehicle for drugs. Flouride is a corrosive poison that will produce serious effects on a long range basis. Any attempt to use water this

way is deplorable.”

Dr. A. G. Blazey, National Legislation Chairman of the Association of Amercan Physicians and Surgeons—“The assininity of fluoridating entire w r ater supplies in a mass-medi-cation maneuver when only half of one per cent is inbibed, is self-evident. Scientifically controlled dosage is utterly impossible via fluoridated drinking water because a wide variation of water is consumed daily by different individuals.” Fluoridation completely disregards the right of the individual to choose for himself what he will do for himself or

his children. After studying REDUCES AIR FARES this subject for at least 15 ; CANBERRA UPI — Aviation years. I for one, as a user of j Minister Reginald Swartz Tuescity water, do not intend to use j day announced a 50 per cent
