Early Fall plowing predicted

LAFAYETTE UPI—Showers last week brought prospects of a speed-up in fall plowing for some sections of Indiana farmland. Robert Straszheim, Purdue University agricultural statistician, said field work last week was limited to five days by the rain, “but the increases in moisture should permit an acceleration of fall plowing and seeding operation.” “Topsoil moisture rating rose from short in the previous week to short to adequate,” Straszheim said. “Subsoil moisture held to a mostly short rating.” His report said 35 per cent of the com is considered mature, “still well behind any previous year on record.” Over 90 per cent of the crop is in or past the dent stage, he said. A year ago 55 per cent of the com was mature and 95 per cent in or past dent.

“In general,” he said, “com harvest is yet to begin although a few scattered fields have been picked. Fall plowing, delayed by dry soils, made slight progress last week. About 55 per cent of the land intended for wheat had been plowed. Wheat seeding began falling behind average with only 10 per cent of the crop sown. About 15 per cent is average. About 20 per cent of the rye and 15 per cent of the barley has been seeded, compared with 35 per cent for rye and 30 for barley a year ago. Some progress was reported in the soybean harvest with 10 per cent of the crop combined. This is about the same as the last two years but behind the average of 20 per cent. Apple harvest was 40 per cent completed, compared with 45 per cent for average.

U.S. plans to deploy new offensive type missile

WASHINGTON UPI — The United States is planning to build and deploy over the next few years a new type of offensive missile that would be able to shower down nuclear warheads on several targets at once. The Pentagon gradually is taking the wraps off the plan, a major development in nuclear warfare. It would be an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) that would separate into numerous warheads, all of which would strike targets that could be several hundred miles apart. One missile, therefore, could strike several cities at once. Defense Secretary Robert S. McNamara told a United Press international editors conference at San Francisco earlier this month that in the future “many of our launchers will carry multiple warheads.” This week, in an interview published in Life Magazine, McNamara for the first time in public record used the official Pentagon name for proposed system: ''Multiple Independent gained by using 20. much more difficult for a Soviet antiballistic missile system ABM to shoot down a significant number of warheads, even assuming Russia goes ahead with a “heavy” ABM deployment. It is designed to do a better job of putting the right number of megatons on a given target. If a target can be destroyed with one megaton, little is gaoned by using 20. In Defense Department figuring, five separate megaton blasts may accomplish the destruction of one 20-megaton bomb.. With MIRV, the United States is expected to greatly increase its offensive nuclear power in the years ahead. This is being done to cover the possibility Russia may proceed with a major ABM program. She already has started such a program on a small scale. Russia is assumed to be working on multiple warheads, though probably considerably behind the United States. But the possibility of a Soviet MIRV is one reason the Johnson administration has decided to go ahead with a limited antimissile defense. This may be mainly aimed at China but its side purpose will be to increase protection for U.S. Minuteman missiles against Soviet attack.
