Feminine Horizon

By HORTENSE MYERS INDIANAPOLIS UPI — Six Indiana women will join in a brainstorming nine-state meeting aimed at pinpointing the ‘areas of major concern” for feminine workers, including their loss of status as professional people. The Indiana Governor’s Commission on the Status of Women has stayed out of the limelight since the 1965 Legislature

when it worked to obtain passage of a minimum wage law. But the organization has not atrophied. It—along with other state and city commissions— hopes to sponsor conferences next year which will be pointed toward changing some rather puzzling and discouraging statistics. For example, a new report from the Women’s Bureau of the Labor Department says the number of women among pro-

fessional workers has declined from 40 per cent in 1950 to 37 per cent in 1966. The report concludes that is “partly because of the rapid expansion in | science and engineering, professions in which relatively few ' women have customarily been employed.” Also the earnings of the nation’s nearly 28 million women ! workers “are far lower than men's.” “Women employed year around, full time in 1965 had a median wage and salary income of a little more than $3,800 in contrast to nearly

' $6,400 for men and the gap between women’s and men’s earnings has widened in recent i years,” the report said. j As a result of these, and other items in the report, the women’s bureau planned a series of regional conferences to take the place of a national conference. The Great Lakes regional meeting will be held Nov. 26-28 at the Universtiy of Wisconsin, with attendance limited to six persons each from Indiana, U- ' linois, Ohio, Minnesota, MichI igan, Wsconsin, Iowa, and j North and South Dakota.

Indiana chairman Eunice C. Pwoberts, Bloomington, selected to join her at the Wisconsin regional meteing. Mrs. Esther T. Singer, South Bend; Mrs. Beulah Btaes, Newburgh, and Miss Eve Purvis. Mrs. Walter B. Lichtenstein and Mrs. Billie Boucher, all of Indianapolis. The Indiana commission also tentatively picked March 30 for its state conference, the format to be determined by decisions reached at the planning conference. Among the other factors of concern in the report were: —The rate of unemployment

for women averaged 4.9 per cent in 1966 for women, compared with 3.3 per cent for men. —The greatest rise in labor force participation is among women past 45 years many of whom have completed rearing their families, but whose work skills are outdated. The number of girls graduating from high school exceeds the number of boys but only 45 per cent of the girls, compared to 57 per cent of the male graduates enter college the next fall. —Of all the doctorate de-

grees awarded in 1964-65, 11 per cent went to women and , the other 89 per cent to men. I,—A survey among 2,000 executives on women’s chances at the managerial level produced the conclusion that “only the exceptional, indeed, the overqualified, women can hope to succeed.”
