“It was the first time it had occurred to me that librarians didn’t come in boxes with the books. At Mrs. Kelly’s suggestion, I worked for the Indianapolis Public Library for two years." She found she liked the work and obtained a library science degree from Western Reserve then went to work as librarian at Drake University. Miss Nelle Coats, who headed the catalogue division of the Indiana State Library, persuaded Miss Wickizer to return to Indiana and take her job, so she could retire. She did return in 1957 and worked for two years under Miss Coats before becoming division head. The new library director has undertaken a 10-year project in which the method of classification for material and books is being changed from the Dewey method to one used by the Library of Congress. “We would have been drowning paper if we did not change,” she said. “In one year we receive as a federal depository as many as 41.000 pieces, ranging from a one-page pamphlet to a several-volume work.” In addition, the catalogue division must handle about 3.000 new titles of books each year, plus other material. Indiana’s geneology division which Miss Wickizer termed “one of the very finest west of the Appalachians.” also gets much material which comes to

some pretty good reasons why the Pacific during the war | should be returned. The Bonins, the Volcanoes Iowa Jima and the Ryukyus— j with the exception of Okinawa i —appear to have little strategic importance to the United j States. The United States during the fifties verbally recognized the i “residual sovereignty” of the islands, populated mainly by Japanese whom Japan’s political leaders claim want the islands returned. Many Americans believe— and some Japanese agree—that even if the base turned over to Japan it will still have to be manned.

return of all the islands the United States won in the

western Pacific.

Thus, from the Japanese view American indifference to the problem may be desirable. American hawks would not be likely to take kindly to a proposal that they hand over an important military base won with GI blood spilled in a war started by the Japanese. But tough talk like that j currently is considered “bad 1 form” in the diplomatic circles where the problem is being , dealt with. There are, in fact,

Okinawa? Would the Japanese be willing to press the buttons that would loose the nuclear warheads if such a decision ever became necessary? These knotty questions are some of the reasons some Japanese leaders are willing to say, hsually in private, that it is okay with them if the United States holds onto its military installations on Okinawa. The United States employs 56.000 Okinawans on the island and last year pain them $40 million in wages. U.S. forces spent $235 million last year on Okinawa, which reported a Gross National Product of $435

million.

The Japanese keep running polls they claim indicate the Okinawans prefer a Japanese administration on the island. But there are also a lot of Okinawans who would think twice before they would go along with killing the goose j that lays the golden egg. |

Partner bids One Spade, next player passes, both sides are vulnerable, and you have a part score of 40. What would you bid now with each of the following five hands? 1. 495 VQ8642 +KJ3 4,A75 2. 40983 4AKJ4 4 74 *Q82 3. 4Q74 VAJ62 4KQ3 4AJ9 4. 462 9Q974 4J863 4J53 5. 4K9732 4AQJ74 48 4J4 1. One notrump. Without a part score, the normal response would be two hearts, but with it, the better response is one notrump. That is because partner may pass two hearts with indifferent support for the suit —since a game contract has been reached — and our heart suit is simply not good enough to offset this possibility. Normal bidding practices change when a part score situation

exists.

2. Two spades. Without the part score, the proper response would be three spades, but since a jump to three with a part score of 40 would constitute a slam try, you bid only two spades. Of course, a two heart response is out of the question since partner might pass. Change the deuce of clubs to the king and you would have enough for a three spade bid. Such a jump would merely indicate interest in a slam; it would not be a forcing bid.

3. Three notrump. This bid !• likewise not forcing, though it clearly indicates interest in ft slam. The point count for threa notrump with a part score of 40 is usually 17 or 18. The bid guarantees strength in the three unhid suits as well as notrump distribution. 4. One notrump. Ordinarily, you would pass because game is too remote to justify keeping the bidding alive, but with • part score of 40, the requirements for a response are reduced from the 6-point minimum normally expected for a notrump response. Since you don’t have to go as high aa usual to reach a game, you adjust your sights accordingly. 5. Three spades. Here you can make a slam try based largly on the attractive distribution. True, you have only 11 high-card points, but a slam is possible even opposite a minimum opening bid. With as little as the ace of spades, king of hearts and ace of clubs, th# hand might easily pro due a twelve tricks. It would be unwise to respond two hearts for the reasons previously given, or to respond three hearts which would be a jump-shift and a 100% forcing bid. We have the values to suggest a slam, but partner should be given the option of continuing or not, as he sees fit.
