You. Your Child And School
(By DAVID NYDICK) One of the major conflicts in education today is that of segregation. There is no need to go into the details of the problem. It’a on the front pages of •very newspaper. It’s being discussed in every section of the country. There are many ideas on how to correct the problem. What is the answer ? Perhaps each community will have to decide this for themselves. The result must be integration as indicated by the United States Supreme Court Violence must be avoided. This only leads to Increased feelings of antagomism. Parents in communities throughout the nation are faced with difficult decisions. Should their children attend schools where demonstrations are in progress ? They might face
physical danger. Is it right for children to be involved? The answer to these serious questions must be based on the parent’s judgement. They must carefully evaluate all alternatives and then make a decision. Let’s consider some of the factors. The courts have made certain decisions. State commissioners of education have issued directives. School boards have passed resolutions. There are local avenues to appeal rulings which seem wrong. These methods are set up to protect individuals in our democracy. It has been made clear that no one is above the law. Peaceful demonstrations are within the law. These will continue. In helping your own child, remember that he is entitled to a complete explanation of the situation. There is no point in
1 having him depend upon rumor and bits of information for an understanding of this complex problem. First, try to sit down as a family and discuss all the implications of what is happening. This will probably be sufficient. If you need help in this task, you might seek the advice of your priest, teacher, or other knowledgeable person. Your child is entitled to an education. Keeping him out of school is a drastic step. Why not use other means ? Obviously there are many. If you are concerned, discuss the matter with the school authorities. They will be able to give you a realistic picture of the total situation. This is a grave social problem. The schools have been | chosen as a major testing
ground. The future is certainly going to be different. The exact nature of this change is not predictable. Perhaps this social upheaval is difficult but it does exist and must be faced.
