This hand illustrates a principle of play which has a great deal to do with the technique of good dummy play. Let’s say you’re declarer at six Let’s say you’re declarer at six diamonds and West leads a heart. After winning with the jack and drawing trumps, you could of course stake everything'on a finesse of the queen of clubs, but this would be a relatively poor way of playing the hand. A better approach would be to cash the ace of spades, enter

dummy with a heart, ruff the queen of spades, cash the ace of hearts, and then lead & club from dummy, planning to finesse the seven if East follows low. With hearts and spades eliminated from both hands in preparation for the endplay, West would be forced to make a favorable return after taking the seven of clubs. In the actual hand, however, the method would fall because East would presumably play the nine on the club lead from dummy and you would then go down regardless of how you continued. The attempted elimination play is a step in the right direction, but there is a still better line of play available. What you should do after cashing the ace of spades at trick four is also cash the A-Q of hearts and then lead the queen of spades from dummy. If East follows low, you discard a club and make the rest because West is endplayed. Of course, it may turn out that East has the king of spades instead of West and covers the queen with the king, but then it has cost you nothing to try the play. The point is that if West has the king of spades the slam is absolutely unbeatable, while if East has it, you still have other strings left in your bow.

convicted in absentia Truong Dinh Dzu, the runner-up “peace” candidate in this month’s presidential election, for passing a bad check and illegal money transfer. Dzu said he was framed.

While the trial was going on, Dzu told a crowd of 500 Saigon University students the election was “fraudulent.” He said that Thieu won “at least a million votes” by rigging the election.

A woman judge at Saigon’s court of first instance sentenced Dzu to nine months in jail and fined him $27,777. Under South Vietnamese law Dzu has the right to oppose the conviction within one month after its publication. “Who let the Americans come into our country and install big bases? Wasn’t it Thieu and Ky?” Dzu asked the crowd. Three lawyers represented Dzu at the trial. But they were not permitted to argue his case because Dzu was not present. The convictions were on a charge that Dzu passed a worthless check for $8,500 and another that he illegally transfered $11,500 to a bank In San Francisco. Dzu was acquitted on a charge of embezzlement. Court officials said the legal procedures could postpone Dzu’s arrest by five or six months. Start developing super-fighter WASHINGTON UPI — The United States has begun development of a new super-fighter to supplement the controversial TFX family of warplanes. Heavily censored Congressional testimony revealed the proposed plane would be designed both for attacking ground targets and for air-to-air combat with the next generation of Soviet-designed MIGS. It would probably have a swing wing like the TFXN according to testimony, and differing versions would be built for the Navy and Air Force, again similar to the TFX fighter-bomber. The Navy calls its version the “VFAX.” The Air Force calls It simply the “FXM.” According to Senate testimony, plans are ‘‘quite far along” on the proposed planes. Defense Secretary Robert S. McNamara outlined plans for the aircraft in testimony before Congress Jan. 26. He said that since both the Navy and Air Force might need similar aircraft, he was examining the possibility of a joint development program. Gen. J. P. McConnell, Air Force Chief of Staff, told Congress last February that in the next war, U.S. planes might meet far more advanced opposition in the air than they do in Vietnam. The Air Force, the Navy and the Defense Department’s Division of Research and Engineering are working on the project at the specific orders of McNamara. Navy officials gave the Senate defense appropriations subcommittee some idea about the proposed plane in July during a closed-door session. Vice Adm. T. F. Connolly, Chief of Naval Air Operations, said the Navy has designed a plane that he said “will do both the fighter and attack job. which will probably have a swing wing, be built around a new engine, have advanced electronics, take the most modem and sophisticated weapons.” Connolly’s testimony on the weight and top speed of the plane was deleted. He said it will have “a very nice low landing speed . . . and a good rate of climb, good acceleration, and be generally a high performance fighter.”

The Putnam County 4-H Program is one that the people of this county can be proud of. The people of Putnam County have shown great support and strong participation in this program. They are the ones who make the program successful. The Putnam County 4-H Program offers thirty-six widely varied projects for members to choose from. Some projects are more popular than others. The projects that have the least interest have not been promoted here in the county as many were unsuitable. The projects which we offer are the following: Arts and Crafts, Beef, Clothing, Com, Oats, Potatoes, Soybeans, Wheat, Dairy, Electric, Entomology, Flowers, Food Preservation, Foods, Forestry, Garden, Health, Home Furnishings, Home Grounds Improvement, Horse and Pony, Jr. Leadership, Sheep, Personality, Photography, Pig, Poultry, Rabbits, Recreation, Geology, Weather, Soil & Water Conservation, Strawberry, Tractor, Weeds, Wildlife and Woodworking. As you can see, this is several projects. However, there are more projects offered from the State 4-H Club Office that we do not have. Some are new and just have not been introduced, and others have been

tried and dropped. These are Automobile, Bee, Dog, Aviation and a few others that are just being developed. The Bee project was introduced here but was dropped as there was not enough interest or enrollment. The Dog project was tried a couple of times but there was not enough interest to carry it through. However, it still has good possibilities. The Automotive and Aviation projects also have good possibilities. These are projects which do not warrant a regular 4-H Club but would be suited for a project club. This would mean that everyone in the club would be working on the same project.
