Frye got the first down during the drive then carried for three more yards and planted the ball on the 34. Big John New bulled his way to another first down and it looked as though the Cubs were getting somewhere. Halfback Kevin See got the carrying assignment from Norris and promptly rolled up the third first down of the long drive to give the Cubs even more hope, but it all ended after that when a quarterback sneak by Norris failed to reach a first down by inches. Gerstmeyer received possession of the ball once more on their own 31. The Cubs had made their biggest show of the night.

several times but with just 13 games to go, they’re just 1)4 games out with an 83-66 record and a .557 percentage. The White Sox did the most to create the three-way tie, beating the Minnesota Twins 73 Friday night while the Detroit Tigers were escaping wth a 5-4 victory over the Washington Senators. The Boston Red Sox could have taken over sole possession of first but they fell into the tie with a 6-2 loss to the Baltimore Orioles. Stanky laughed after the game, “some people have been writing us off for a month but we aren’t dead, the zombies are walling and the teams in front of us better watch out.” It still seems doubtful the Whte Sox can pass three teams in two weeks—but with the Sox pitching staff, they can’t be. counted out.
