Oppose LBJ's tax increase WASHINGTON UPI—A majority of the House tax writing committee still opposes President Johnson’s request for a 10 per cent tax increase, the panel’s chairmen reported Tues-

day.

Chairman Wilbur D. Mills of the House Ways A Means Committee said the administration, despite economic barometers, had failed to make its case so far for a 10 per cent surtax on private and corporate income tax payments. Mills’ committee resumed hearings today, after a 10-day recess, on the bill designed to raise more than S7 billion a year to combat inflation and help finance the war in Viet-

nam.

The Commerce Department gave Johnson some more ammunition to support the bill Monday, reporting retail sales scored record gains in August. Mills said in an interview, however, that members of his committee just back from the Labor Day recess reported their constituents were troubled over the Vietnam war and the tax

proposal.

The tax measure has received a chilly reception in Congress, but leaders expect a tax in-

Frank Sinatra loses 2 teeth LAS VEGAS. New UPI — Singer Frank Sinatra was punched in the mouth and reportedly lost two teeth during a weekend ruckus at the Sands Hotel before abruptly canceling his appearance at the strip glamor spot. Bystanders said Carl Cohen, 54. vice president of the Howard Hughes-owned hotel, was called to calm an enraged Sinatra who was shouting obscenities in the gambling casino. When the singer hurled handsful of betting chips into Cohen’s face, the 250-pound Cohen retaliated by smashing Sinatra in the mouth, the witnesses said. A spectator said Sinatra loft two teeth. Sinatra then stormed out of the hotel, where he had appear- ! ed regularly for 16 years, and with wife Mia Farrow in tow ; returned to Southern California in his private jet.

Noted designer features feathers NEW YORK UPI — TO fashion designer Arnold Scaasi. the fuss of feathers is the most feminine look In a woman’s wardrobe. Scaasi uses plumage lavishly in his new fall custom clothes collection, which ultimately will find its way into the closets of some of the nation’s wealthiest women. The designed showed the collection to the press and some of his New York customers. Scaasi used ostrich mostly, and only for late day and evening. Tiers of plumes circled short formals from strapless top to hem, bordered long stoles, lined huge capes, or formed entire skirts. A short formal, done in heavily jewelled gold and silver tones, had white ostrich tiers seven and eight inches wide circling it from top to hem and the ostrich repeated in a silvery stole border. When Scaasi wearied of feathers, he turned to ruffles or to the most luxurious of brocades and silk prints. A soft pink chiffon boasted a border of pink ruffles around its strapless top, ruffles around the hem, ruffles in a double row down the back to the floor, and ruffles bordering the matching long rectangular stole.
