Ben Hoover captures Windy Hill golf tourney
Ben Hoover captured the Windy Hill Club Golf Championship in the final day of competition in 1963 then lost in tournament finals in 1964 to then 19-year-old Bill Eckhardt and again in 1966 to C. B. Hammond. He was beginning to think maybe he was destined to be the “bridesmaid” and never the “bride” from then on, that is until Sunday. Hoover then once again became the “bride” and blistered
, the Windy Hill 6,310-yard course with a hustling 149 to beat out fellow club member Ken Douglas in the 36-hole final match play competition. Douglas lost the championship with a 150. Both players had worked their way through a summer qualification tournament, a sixteen player play-off, and then found themselves deadlocked even-up after eighteen holes of the final 1 match. before an unusually large gallery of fifty or more spectators they halved the first hole. Douglas then captured holes 2 and 3, they halved holes 4 and 5, and Douglas was two up. On the sixth Douglas made the crowd look twice when he laid his tee shot three feet from the cup and then dropped a birdie-2 putt and secured a three hole lead. But it wasn’t over yet. Hoover came back with three beautiful drives right down the middle and took a par on holes 7 and 8 and birdie-3 on nine. Going into the tenth hole both players were once again even. Hoover said, “This was one of the tightest and most exciting tournaments I’ve ever played in. The lead changed hands so many times it was just up to the guy who could drop the putts at the right time.” Douglas, who has played in two previous club championship finals and lost one of them to Hoover, sunk a six foot birdie-3 putt on the tenth green only to be followed by a bird from Hoover. The two finalists then halved holes 12, 13, 14, 15, and 16 with pars. Standing even with the seventeenth hole coming up both Hoover and Douglas whipped long drives down the fairway of the 400-yard hole. Hitting from good position Hoover , placed his second shot on the green while Douglas’ ball got the wind and fell to the left in a sand trap. Hoover parred the hole and Douglas had to settle for a bogey 5. Both men took a par-4 on the eighteenth and Hoover claimed the championship. “We both had plenty of opportunities,” he commented, “I’m just happy to have won.” The championship along with runner-up and special trophies will be awarded at a dinner October 7.

Gets QB job
BLOOMINGTON UPI—Indiana coach John Pont settled the two-way battle for quarterbacking duties Monday by giving Harry Gonso. Findlay, Ohio, the I | job and moving John Isenbar-1 ger, Muncie, to running back. “It was a difficult decision to j make and we would be happy! with either but we’re going with 1 Harry because he is a shade more consistent,” Pont said. The switch pitched Isenbarger against veteran Mike Krivoshia. the Big Ten s No. 2 rusher at fullback last season. Isenbarger's biggest asset in challenging Krivoshia will be his super-
ior speed.
In other shifts, sophomore | Bob Kirk moved to offensive tackle in place of A] Schmidt in an effort to get more speed in the line while on defense | sophomore Bill Wolfe moved to tackle in place of Ed Harrison.
Cards magic number is 8
Nelson Briles pitched his worst game of the season, got away wtih it and reduced the .St. Louis Cardinals’ magic number for winning the National League pennant to “eight.” The authority on Briles’ mound perfromance Monday night was his own manager, Red Schoendienst. who had to grip the edges of his foamcushioned bench to keep from yanking the 24-year-old right-
hander.
Instead, the Cardinal skipper
watched Briles throw 120 pitch- | es in beating the Philadelphia Phillies 5-1 and recording his seventh consecutive victory since filling in for Bob Gibson
in the pitching rotation. Briles is 8-2 as a starter and
has a 2.41 earned run average after being promoted from the bullpen when Gibson broke his leg on July 15. He scattered eight hits and struck out six, but still had trouble pleasing
Schoendienst.
“With all the games Briles has pitched this year, this was his worst.” said the red-haired Cardinal manager. “He pitched like this last year, when he won only four games and lost 15. He couldn’t get the ball over but he pitched well enough which is
what counts.”

NEWCOMBE HONORED NEW YORK UPI — Australian tennis star John Newcombe has been named recipient of the first “tennis player of the year”
trophy.
Newcombe, the U.S. and Wimbledon champion, was selected winner of the award Monday. The trophy goes annually to the amateur who compiles the most points by high finishes in the world's top five tournaments on a format devised by a group of New York tennis Writers.
President Calvin Griffith said last month his Minnesota club “need a relief pitcher more than anything” to win the American League pennant this season. When Cal Ermer took over the managerial duties from Sam Mele in early June, Jim Perry came to him and asked for more mound work. The Twins were in sixth place, six games off the pace. Perry had appeared in 15 games and pitched 35 innings. His record was 2-4 and his earned run average was a disappointing 4.37. The slender right hander was promised more work by the new skipper. Perry got his chance Monday | night when he was called on in the fourth inning to protect the Twins 9-5 lead over Washington, j He shutout the Senators over: the final six innings, holding! them to four hits, while his i teammates Increased their victory margin for & 13-5 win. The win stretched Minnesota’s , league lead to one game over idle Boston. Perry had already shown his stuff as a spot starter when he turned in back-to-back shutouts over Washington and California in the middle of August and helped lead the Twins into the midst of a four-team battle for | the American League pennant. He now has an 8-7 record. In the only other gaame ! ROOKIE DROPPED ST. LOUIS UPI — Rookie George Sutor and Mike Wittman and guard Sherman Dillard were dropped Monday by the St. Louis Hawks of the National Basketball Association. Coach Richie Guerin said that if no other NBA clubs ask for the players they will be given a chance to play at St. Louis farm clubs at Wilkes-Barre, Pa. or Battle Creek, Mich.
Ten-year-old Andy Woods of St. Louis, turned in a no-hit seven inning game in the Khoury League. But he walked 23 young players.
acheduled, the Chicago White Sox dropped into fourth place, two and one-half games behind Minnesota, by losing a 6-1 decision to Baltimore. The Minnesota victory dropped Detroit two full games back. In the senior circuit, the league-leading St. Louis Cardinals reduced their magic number to eight when they beat Philadelphia 5-1. Second-place San Francisco remained a half-game in front of third-place Cincinnati by blanking Los Angeles 4-0, while the Reds rallied to edge Pittsburgh 4-3. The only other game saw Houston outslug Chicago 11-10. Atlanta and New York were not scheduled. Harmon Killebrew collected Barry will sit out season OAKLAND, Calif. UPI—Rick Barry, the National Basketball Association's * leading scorer who jumped to the new American Basketball Association, announced Monday he will sit out the 1967-68 season. Barry made the announcement on a sports show over radio station KNEW at Oakland. “The 1967-68 season will find me sitting out my option with the San Francisco Warriors,” j Barry reported. ‘T’ve decided it would be both unfair to the Warriors and me to return to San Francisco.” Last June, Barry signed a $225,000 three-year contract with the Oakland Oaks of the ABA owned by singer Pat Boone and coached by Rick's father-in-law, Bruce Hale. The Warriors subsequently went to court where a judge upheld the NBAs option clause and issued an injunction prohibiting Barry from playing with any other club except the War- j riors in 1967-68. Warriors’ owner, Franklin, Mieuli then filed a $4.5 million damage suit against Boone and the Oaks, alleging that Barry was induced to breach a valid contract with the Warriors. The suit is pending in Los Angeles.
