WASHINGTON UPI — The outlook for government action to help dairy farmers who say they are caught in a severe cost-price squeeze remains uncertain today following the most recent dairy “situation report” indicating that dairy farming is becoming less and less attractive. High Agriculture Department officials say that requests for hearings on proposals for milk price increases under federal marketing orders are still ‘‘under consideration.”

Dairymen have asked Agriculture Secretary Orville L. Freeman to hold the hearings on their requests for an across-the-board price increase of 50 cents per hundredweight. Freeman, who has authority to set minimum fluid milk prices in areas covered by the federal marketing orders, is not expected to make a decision “in the immediate future,” sources said. Freeman is under increasing pressure from Capitol Hill and dairy farmers to take action to

Opening lead—king of clubs. It is certainly true that you would occasionally play a hand better if you could see all 52 cards instead of the usual 26, but, even so, there are deals where making the maximum number of tricks is a genuine challenge with all four hands exposed. For example, take this deal which occurred in a national team of four championship. The results varied from table to table, but this was not really surprising in view of the unusual distribution of the NorthSouth hands. At quite a few tables South got to four hearts doubled,

which was easy to make with perfectly normal play. All that South had to do was ruff the club lead, cash the A-K of spades, and then ruff three spades in dummy and three clubs in his hand. This would bring him to ten tricks; his only losers would be a spade, a heart and a diamond. However, some of the NorthSouth pairs wound up In five hearts doubled, and in every case these pairs went down at least one. After ruffing two spades in dummy and cashing the ace of hearts, they found themselves too severely shortened in trumps to cope with the 3-1 trump break. Actually, these declarers could have made the contract with perfect play, but it is only fair to add that a look at the East-West cards would have been very helpful in accomplishing this task. The winning line of play is simple enough. Declarer ruffs the club lead, cashes two top spades, trumps a spade in dummy with the king, ruffs another dub, and trumps a second spade in dummy with the ace. Declarer now leads the three of hearts to his nine, losing to the queen, but still has enough trumps left to bring home ths contract. The only tricks he loses are a heart and a diamond.
