Tiger cubs thump Linton in WIC contest, 26-7
By FRANK PUCKETT, JR. . Banner Sports Editor Beware all ye Western Indi-' ana Conference football foes!! If you’re hunting in the Greencastle area for a conference win don't mess with the Tiger Cubs, they’re out for another 1 championship. The visiting Linton Miners j can readily testify to that fact after Greencastle’s prepsters sent them home the victim of a 26-7 defeat Friday night that| found the defending WIC champs chalking up their second consecutive win of the season in as many starts. The loss was Linton's second in two outings. Tiger Cub mentor Bob Bergman sent his squad right to work in the early minutes of the first period when they mustered 95 yards from Linton’s : kick-off to the goal line with less than six minutes clicked off the clock. Frye and See combined to get three first downs. Monnett then charged five ^ yards, John New tried his luck ' but was halted on the line of scrimmage when he plowed into Linton's line that averages six - foot and two - hundred pounds and See wrangled three yards. Ten seconds later quarterback Pete Norris got behind See and followed him into the
his team into the lead, 12-0., Norris booted the extra point | and it was 13-0, the Cubs. Greencastle scrambled their way to 231 total yards during the first half and ended the game with 361 while Linton netted a close 300. Forty-eight of the Cubs’ yards were gained in the air with Linton passing for six. Greencastle also totaled 17 first downs during the game to Linton’s ten. Mighty 5-6 Jay Frye added his first of two touchdowns before the first half ended when he climaxed a long and hard drive by his teammates from the twenty yard line with a beautiful side stepping run from the 24 that left Linton’s defensive staggering all over the field. It was 5:31 on the clock and the Cubs had added a touchdown to make the score 19-0. During the time left in the half Norris booted a kick-off into the Linton end zone (60yard boot). Linton put the ball into threatening position with a drive to the Cub 17, but with :05 on the clock ‘‘Jungle Jim” Knauer pounced on the ball just as quarterback Kenny Gillan fumbled and the half ended with the Cubs in command. The second half almost proved
made the kick good and Linton showed on the score board for
the first time. 19-7.
The Cubs combined some scrap for hard yardage and a few pass plays to get their next TD. Frye took the kick to about the 43. See carried twice and gained two yards each time, John New slipped down field and took a pass from Nonis and was downed on the
47 for a first down.
Frye then burst through the lines for sixteen yards, See lost his footing and gave up a yard but little Frye came back on the next play and gained sixteen more yards. With the ball on the 17 yard line See gave it another try and got one yard, Frye waa the man again with an 8-yard gain. It was then Norris who gave the ball to Frye for the second consecutive carry and Frye slid under the Linton defensive like Maury Wills stealing second base and scored. Norris made the extra point good and Greencastle held their dominate lead, 26-7. Big John New helped the Cubs keep the Miners out of contention in the final minutes by adding a couple of tackles to
his record. He made 17 tackles during the game. Greencastle will travel to West Vigo’s field next week where they will meet WIC foe Terre Haute Gerstmeyer. end zone to score with 6:13 left on the clock. With the Cubs leading 6-0, Linton scrambled the ball to their own 42 from the kick. Three plays later the Cubs had possession of the ball on their ovm 35. Failing to get a first down Evens had to boot the round pigskin and before the Miners could get anywhere the quarter ended. Returning the ball back to the home team, Linton failed to stop the human barrage the Cubs sent across their defensive line and Tiger Cub Dee Monnett did the honors by crashing into the end zone at 8:58 and putting
to be a different story as the Cub defensive loosened it’s hold on a spirited Linton offense and allowed the Miners to score for the first time and threatened several times. Five-foot nineinch back Tom Bowersock started things with a run from his own 22 to the 31 where John New and Harold Henry brought him dowm. Senior back Steve Murphy, who teamed up with 5-9 back Steve Lynn and 6-3 two-hundred pounder Joe Payne to break the defensive back of Greencastle in the second half by gaining over 200 yards, broke down the right end and blurted into the end zone to score a 64yard touchdown.
