Roberta of Burlington, Ontario, for sending me this hand which I have some reservations about publishing because of the mystifying series of bids by
North.
However, such bidding sequences can be found in every part of the world, and Canada surely cannot claim exclusive rights in this or similar matters. In fact, Mr. Roberts himself says: "I will list the bidding without comment, but I am sure you will feel it is horrible. I was South.” X 'will say nothing publicly
with regard to North’s bidding, except to venture a guess that he is not a member of the Conservative Party. North would have been duly punished for his bidding had West led a diamond, or even a spade, but assumed that the double by East called for a heart lead In accordance with the slam doubling convention. So he led a heart. Mr. Roberts of course realized that he could no longer go down more than one, since he hart eleven tricks in clear sight. But. he also realized that there was now a chance to make the contract because the double by East seemed to marie him with all the missing high cards. Accordingly, Mr. Roberts ran five heart tricks on which ha discarded a spade and a diamond from his hand. He then ran five club tricks on which he discarded two diamonds from
dummy.
On the last club lead. East, whose last four cards were the K-J of spades and A-K of diamonds, had to discard and ha elected to discard the king of
diamonds.
Mr. Roberts thereupon played the queen of diamonds to put East on lead, and East was then forced to return a spade. As a result, Mr. Roberts made two spade tricks and the slam, thereby fulfilling North’s prediction that South would make
six notrump.
