Social Security deductions up
WASHINGTON UPI—Middle will take another sharp jump
class wage earners are having more than twice as much taken out of their pay checks for Social Security this year as in
1959.
For Americans making 56.600 or more in 1967, $290.40 will be withheld and placed, along with an equal amount paid by employers, in Social Security trust funds for present and future benefit payments. Compare that with the maximum $120 paid in 1959, or even to the maximum $174 withheld
in 1965.

In 1968, $334 would be withheld. The amount would jump to $364 in 1969; $395 in 1970; $429 In 1973: and $448 in 1987. President Johnson wants even larger increases in the amount
withheld.
While Johnson has varied the practice slightly, presidents and Congress like to increase benefits with an election approach
medical care for 19 million older Americans has increased the bite. The other aspect is what the administration calls inadequate benefits for the elderly. It would appear impossible for a person to survive on the $50-a-month minimum provided by the House bill or to make ends meet in a big city on the $212 maximum. Currently, the average monthly benefit to the retired worker is

By United Press International Rain fell across the lower Mississippi Valley, across the Southern Plains and in the Pacific Northwest today while a firmly-entrenched high pressure zone gave the rest of the nation clear and pleasant weather. A weak low pressure system and an influx of moist air from the Gulf of Mexico produced 1.16 inches of rain at McAlester, Okla., in six hours. Rain in the Northwest was the result of a frontal system from the Pacific. In Idaho, the Weather Bureau issued a red flag alert in the area of two
big forest fires. The alert means scattered rains, complicated by dry weather and shifting winds, making fire conditions the most dangerous. Some 5,400 men were fighting blazes in Idaho where 66,000 acres of woodland have been reduced to ashes. The amount of rain in the area was not appreciably helpful — averaging two-tenths of an inch in six hours. And some thundershowers produced wind gusts of 40 to 50 miles an hour late Tuesday in southeastern Idaho and western Montana.
Suspect sought in shotgun slaying
GREENFIELD UPI—A suspect described as having “a mental problem” was sought today in the shotgun slaying Tuesday of an elderly general store owner. The suspect was not identified pending filing of charges against him today. Authorities said he drove away in a white 1965 Buick after J. W. Worley, 75, was shot to death at his store in the community of Eden north of here. Hancock County sheriff’s officers and state police said the suspect, a former resident of Eden, also was believed to have fired at two young children shortly before Worley was slain.
Investigating officers said , utes before the slaying a mai relatives of the suspect told stopped a car at the farm hom»

them he felt “the whole world was down on him” and that he had been “done an injustice” in connection with an estate. They quoted him as telling friends that “nobody likes me
more.”
Officers said the suspect lived in a building owned by Worley any : until last May when he moved
to Washington, Ind.
A little girl said that Worley was shot to death by a man who walked into the store carrying a shotgun. She told officers that Worley asked the man “How are you?” and the man replied “I don’t feel like talking” and opened fire. Worley was killed by a blast in the head. Police said that about 30 min-
