Colbert of 'Time Tunnel has both feet on the ground
(By VERNON SCOTT) HOLLYWOOD (UP I) — Robert Colbert, who flies through the centuries in “The Time Tunnel," has his feet on the ground off-camera. The husky, 35-year-old star of the science fiction thriller has been married to his wife Dotty for five years. They have a daughter Cammie Shaun, 16 months. Colbert has purchased a new, spacious home in Toluca Lake, the residential district of the San Fernando valley which is home to such other stars as Bob Hope and Sandra Dee. The new house has four bedrooms and a guest house. The latter will be occupied by old time jazz singer Harry Richman whom Colbert has befrien-

ded in recent years. Richman’s salad days are long behind him, but he and Colbert, despite the difference in their ages are as close as father and son. The Colberts are preparing to move from their current quarters, also in Toluca Lake, which Dotty decorated in what Bob describes as “early hodgepodge.” Colbert has little time to oversee the remodeling of his new home. He leaves for work at 5 a.m. and rarely returns until after 8 p.m. Because the show requires Colbert to be in almost every scene, and most of the action is physical, the actor is exhausted at the end of the day. He’s suffered broken elbow caps, cuts and bruises, and laid his forehead open—five stitches worth — on the show. Bob is a member of Riveria Country Club and the Los Angeles Athletic Club, but with so much physical activity on the ABC-TV sene'- he finds it unnecessary to work out to keep in good shape. On weekends he’s a crew member of the 44-foot sailboat of a friend. The Colberts have an English secretary who lives with them and a houseboy who does all the cleaning and gardening. Bob happily admits he’s useless at domestic chores. But he enjoys playing host. Their’s is a drop-in house on weekends with friends stopping by for lunch or dinner without warning. Twice a year they have a formal, sit-down dinner. 'T don’t like an organized social life,” Colbert says. “And we seldom go out to premieres or for publicity purposes.” Dotty does all the cooking at home except during the summer months when her husband has a go at the barbecue. If pressed he can turn out a Spanish omlet. But he prefers the Hungarian dishes in which Dotty excels. The Colberts have two poodles, Atti and Julie, both females, and an enormous 18-pound black cat who answers to Troubles — when he feels like it. Colbert is stuck with a 1912 suit in his role on the show. At home he has a dozen suits of various colors and more sports jackets than he can count, along with 60 pairs of slacks. At the moment, however, all he can think about is moving into his new home, a prospect which keeps him in a happy frame of mind, his bruises notwithstanding.

SEATTLE (UP I) — Lee Ellen Prevele was a curious youngster. Like any two-year-old. She took a swallow from a container that contained a small amount of lye and her esophagus — or food pipe — was severely burned. That was two years ago and the child since then has had more than 50 operations to open the esophagus, which became partially blocked with scar tissue. On occasions she had to be fed directly through a tube in her abdomen. When it was found that repair was impossible, doctors made a new esophagus for Lee out of a piece of her large intestine. The youngster is recuperating well and doctors rate her chances of total recovery as excellent. But it has been a bad two years for Lee and her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Richard L. Prevele. “I’d estimate our medical bills at about $20,000 but that is nothing compared to the utter anguish we have had,” said Mrs. Prevele. Mrs. Prevele said she hopes their experience will serve one useful purpose, by acting as a reminder to others to keep dangerous substances out of the reach of children.

News Briefs NEW YORK UPI — Graham Loving & Co. says the current market decline probably will end within two weeks with the Dow Jones industrial average around the 880 level. But the analyst says if some “unexpected” news item of any importance should take place, the market would see a “sharp and rather brier' selloff to halt the
current slide. Homblower 4b Weeks Hamphill, Noyes says chances of a market trend reversal seem dim unless all doubts regarding an auto industry strike are removed in current negotiations. Thus, the company says it expects the present consolidation phase to persist into September. Bache & Co. Inc. says it expects more backing and filling in the market for the time being, with selectivity the keynote.

The impending arrival on Broadway of a brand new edition of "Hellzapoppin** provokes fond memories of the original version, created and performed by two zany and uninhibited comics named Olsen and Johnson in the late Thirties. As I recall, the show opened with authentic newsreel shots of Twrmw.iiwi p n H Hitler, but the soundtrack of the former reproduced the voice of Stepin Fetchit and the latter a character from Potash Perlmutter, Then the two stars scampered on stage. Olsen fired a gun into the air—and was inundated by a shower of decoy ducks. Johnson recoiled and cried, ‘Tt’s a lucky thing cows don’t fly” — whereupon two cows fell down.
Then there was the weirdie who followed Johnson around until the latter asked him, "How much would you charge to *»»»!«• a house?” Olsen interrupted to deposit a large cake of ice into the weirdie’s arms. Between blackouts and intermittent gunfire, the weirdie kept reappearing, the cake of ice appreciably gm«n»r each time. Meanwhile, a lady kept wandering up and down the with a rubber plant in her arms; calling vainly for "Oscar." As the show progressed, the rubber plant kept growing. By the curtain it was about ten feet high—and Oscar was still among the missing. ' I have a special reason for remembering "Hellcapoppin." the date of the performance I caught was December 7,1941.
