TT’S BEEN a gloomy kind of year in Washington, with a •1 resultant trend to humorous asides in speeches, calculated to keep listening constituents from worrying themselves to death. And more and more, points out Allen Otten, these asides are self-deprecating, poking fun at the speaker’s own .policies, his own party— and himself! Bobby Kennedy introduced Adlai Stevenson III in Illinois with “If there’s one thing I can’t stand, it’s a fellow running on his name!” Rich- ‘ ’ard Nixon refers to himself as “a dropout from the Electoral College.” When President Johnson appointed Hubert Humphrey chairman of the National Space Council and the Senate made him head of the Oceano- * graphy Council, the V.P. reflected ruefully, “You notice r they only give me assignments out of this world.” Even L.B.J. gets into the act occasionally—as when he asks well-heeled visitors from New York or California, “Tell '-;me truthfully: have you ever seen a sight more beautiful than the sun sinking slowly over those television towers in Austin, Texas?” • • • rr *♦ A worried-looking little man in a florist shop asked for three potted geraniums. “I’m sorry.” said the cleric. "We’re out of - geraniums just now, but we HAVE seme nice potted chrysanthemums.” "No, they won’t do,” replied the man. “I PROMISED my wife I*d water her geraniums while she was away.” • * • At a party, there are two kinds of people—those who want to go home early and those who want to be the last ernes in the place. The trouble is they’re always married to each other. # WSL, by Bennett Cert Distributed by King Features SyndkaU

HOLLYWOOD UPI—A stunning platinum blonde, Playboy magazine’s June Playmate of the Month, goes on trial Aug. 23 on a prostitution charge, po-
lice said Thursday.
Blue-eyed Joey Gibson, 21,
was arrested in a West Hollywood apartment July 12 with another woman and a man. Officers said she gave her name as Nancy Cole and said she was employed as a secretary in
nearby Santa Monica,
she resides.
Miss Gibson could not be reached for comment, but friends said she denied the
charges.
The June issue of Playboy listed Miss Gibson as a psychology graduate of Santa Monica City College and said she also had studied criminology. The story accompanying her nude centerfold photo said she likes to romp on the beach, enjoys playing tennis and likes Hindustani jazz and the Rolling
Stones singing group.
The publication said she delights in browsing in book stores and has a taste for health foods such as carrot juice and sun-
flower seeds. She has orb goal in mind, the magazine said — “the pursuit of Intelligent pleas-
ure.”
“I am my own woman,” the magazine quoted her. "1 lead my life according to no social standards other than my own.” She also was quoted as stating she does not worry about tomorrow because — "I’m having too much fun with my todays.” A Playboy Club spokesman
where j here expressed shock at her ar-
rest. "This is the first time, with all the playmates we’ve had, I’ve ever heard of this hap-
pening,” he said.
In Chicago, Helmut Lorsch, publicity director at the magazine’s headquarters, said “certainly we’re surprised.” But h* said he "definitely” felt the arrest would not stain the girl-next-door Image of the playmates. “We certainly cannot control what they do,” he added.
