GREENCASTLE, IND.

Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Brown and daughter, Jenny, and Larry Salsman were in St. Louis Saturday and Sunday. They enjoyed the doubleheader hall games at Busch Stadium and their trip to the zoo. Sunday was World Service Day and was observed at the local Methodist Church. Mr. L. A. Fleenor gave an interesting and instructive talk on the country of Brazil and on the missionary zeal of Rev. Bob Martin who was one time pastor of a Minneapolis Church where the Fleenors were members. Miss Frankie Dye, who has been visiting in Coatesville, left the Indianapolis airport the first of the week for her home in Detroit. Miss Dye was advised by neighbors where she has been a visitor that she might find j Coatesville a safer place than Detroit from what had been ' coming in on television newsi casts. Around midnight Monday the : town’s fire siren awakened a

crew of sleepy volunteers who drove to the old Charles Walton farm south of high bridge where a house trailer owned by a Mr. Comer was burning. The trailer and its contents had all gone up in smoke when the firemen arrived. The cause of the blaze was not determined and there was no appreciable economic loss. Mr. Elston Herrin entered the Hendricks County Hospital the first of the week for a thorough checkup and possibly some treatment. He had undergone some X-ray tests. Hazlewood’s Pee Wee team came to our town ball lot Tuesday evening and they came with the reputation of being tough to handle. Well, this news about them was correct. They started the game off with a run and the next inning added seven. The pitching and batting of Coatesville was about as ragged as could well be imagined. Both team pitchers issued some 17 walks and six batters were hit by pitched balls. The final count

Let’s say you get to four hearts on the bidding shown and West leads the ten of trump. There are many ways to play the hand, but there is only one that is clearly correct. The key play comes right at the start when East covers the ten of hearts with the jack. The proper play now is to let him win the trick, in which case you cannot be defeated regardless of wh&t the defense does next.

Let’s assume that East continues with a trump, which you win with the ace. (If East plays any other suit at trick two, you win and lead the ace of trumps yourself to establish more or less the same position.) You now cash the ace of diamonds, play a club to the queen, ruff a diamond, play a club to the king, ruff a diamond, then play a club to the ace and ruff

the last diamond.

By this time you have played nine tricks and won eight of them—consisting of the ace of hearts, the ace of diamonds, the A-K-Q of clubs and three diamond ruffs. When you now lead the fourth round of clubs you assure ten tricks, whether or not East ruffs it. You are bound to make either a spade and a club or a spade and dummy’s

last trump.

Note that the outcome would not be affected if East’s distribution were such that he could ruff any one of the earlier club leads. You would still come to ten tricks if he ruffed. Note also that if you took the opening heart lead with the ace you would eventually go down one, assuming best defense. You have to duck the opening lead to stay in the driver’s seat and maintain control over the play*
