PEST OF THE WEEK

Horticultural tip

Wasps: Hornets, Yellow Jackets, Polistes, Mud Daubers and the Cicada Killer are all wasps. They are a group of beneficial insects and attack harmful insects found around the home and in gardens. However, they can attack people as well as insects. Hornets, Yellow Jackets and Polistes may sting you if you go near their nests. Mud Daubers and Cicada Killers usually will not sting unless you touch them or get them caught in your clothes. If wasps build their nests too close to your house or in bushes where children play, you should destroy the nest. Control: For nests above

ground spray with Chlordane, DDT or Dieldrin. Treat ground nests with an insecticide dust such as 59i or 10% DDT, 5% or 6% Chlordane or 1% Dieldrin. Treat the nests at night when there is less danger of being stung.

The Lighter Side

By Dick West WASHINGTON UPI— When I was 8 years old, it was a very good year. Which is rather surprising because the year was 1929. Think back to that year for a moment. Chances are the only thing you can remember about 1929 is the stock market crash. If so, you do it a gross injustice. And in saying that, I’m not relying on my own memory. I have enough trouble remembering things that happened in

1966.

The reason I happen to be familiar with my 8th year is because I’ve just opened a 1929 "time capsule.” This is a little book, being published next month by Time Magazine, which reviews the events of the

year.

The capsule, a sort of minihistory, indicates that in most respects, contrary to widespread belief, 1929 was a humdinger. It was a very good year for memorable utterances by public figures, to 1929, Henry Ford coined the immortal line "Nobody wants to fly with a drunken aviator.” It was a very good year for golf, to 1929, a golfer in Waxahachie, Tex., hit a 158,400yard drive. His ball landed in an airplane. It was a very good year for fearless prognostications. In March of 1929, Herbert Hoover gald, 'T have no fears for the future of our country. It is bright with hope.” The next November, after Wall Street laid an egg, he probably sent his crystal ball out for repairs. Nevertheless, Hoover was Involved that year in an event that proved in the long run to be far more significant than the economic collapse. According to the "time capsule,” he was the first U. S. President to have a telephone installed at his desk. Previously, the Chief Executives had gone down the hall to use the phone, boarding house style.

Before his term was over, ■ Hoover may have wished he had left the phone in the hall. By that time, however, the precedent was established. And a good thing, too. Our present President, from all reports, comes close to being a telephone addict. He has about five phones in his office, give or take a couple of hot lines. It was reported this week that he even answers the phone on somebody else’s desk if he happens to be nearby when it rings. Imagine what it would be like if Lyndon Johnson had to go down the hall to make or take phone calls. He would hardly have enough time left to turn out the lights.

11 more traffic deaths recorded By United Press International Eleven persons were killed In Indiana traffic during the week end, eight of them Sunday. Nine of the 11 deaths occurred in one-car accidents. The 1967 traffic fatality toll climbed to 790, compared with 861 a year ago. An Evansville man and his wife were killed Sunday night when a car ran off a Warrick County road. Dead were Thomas L. Summerlin, 22, Evansville, the driver, and his wife, Elna, 22. A passenger, Michael Morgan, 24, Evansville, was reported in critical condition in St. Mary’s Hospital, Evansville. Police said the Summerlin car hit a three-foot-high bridge railing. Sixteen-year-old Sandra Classon, R. R. 7, Frankfort, was killed Sunday night when a car in which she was riding went off Indiana 26, apparently at high speed. Police said the auto traveled for 135 feet on the left I side, then crossed the pavement and went for 160 feet along the other side before hitting a tree 3.5 miles east of Lafayette. The driver, John M. Conatser, 16, ; Rossville, was injured seriously. Archie Armstrong, 45, Villa Grove, HI., was killed early Sunday when his car hit a guard rail and road sign on U. S. 41 near Rockville. Lawrence Springer, 76, Greentwon, was killed when his car pulled from a side road onto Indiana 26 in Howard County. By Rick du Brow HOLLYWOOD UPI —Clever Clever showcasing of movies as television "specials” by ABC-TV and NBC-TV indicates the public is happy to watch for free at home what it might think twice about paying for on the outside. The viewer is likely to feel less critical if at least he has not had to pay for a mediocre theatre experience. ABC-TV, for instance, had in the past season several movies it advertised as “blockbusters.” One, “The Bridge on the River Kwai,” truly lived up to its billing, and got a tremendous audience. Yet another, "The Robe,” a mediocre motion picture, also got a strong rating. And several other showcased films, "Guys and Dolls” and "Hans Christian Andersen,” neither of them great shakes as movie achievements, also pulled fairly respectable viewing numbers. In the coming season, ABCTV plans a special showcasing of "The King and I,” a fine movie which should do well also. On the other hand, the same network also will present another "blockbuster” attraction, the remake of “Mutiny on the Bounty” with Marlon Brando, an unsatisfactory and unsuccessful production which, however, is a pretty fair bet to pull a sizable video audience Sept. 24 because the home viewer is less demanding, and it will seem an event. And it is an event next to "Bonanza’ 'or "My Three Sons.” NBC-TV, meanwhile, showed astuteness in the past season by giving “world premiere” billing to a group of original two-hour B-movies that were produced because of the growing shortage of better motion pictures for televsion. The results in the ratings astounded the trade. For example, three of these productions—"Doomsday Flight,” "The Longest Hundred Miles” and "Fame Is the Name of the Game”—were among the most popular films of the season, though none will ever rate on anybody’s "best movies” list. NBC-TV, in addition to needing productions, cleverly guessed that the public might be thankful for something reasonably new — and coupled that guess, or hope, with first-class promotion. to the coming season, despite the increasing shortage of good films not yet seen on televsion, viewers will have a field day— because more and more movies are being sold more and more quickly to video.

Young Lyndon at White House WASHINGTON UPI —There is another lyndon in the White House today — Patrick Lyndon Nugent, the President’s grandson. The President’s daughter, Luci, and her husband Patrick J. Negent flew in from Austin, Tex., Sunday for a reunion with the Johnsons and old friends before they head for Nassau in the Bahamas for a second honeymoo. Baby Lyn, 5 weeks old, will remain at the White House while Luci and Pat are gone. ■White House preparations to make the Johnson’s blue-eyed grandson comfortable included conversion of a third-floor, bluewalled bedroom into a nursery.

There are about 1,700 species of snakes distributed throughout the temperate and tropical regions of the world.
