4 K874 The bidding: South West North East Fishbein Avarelll Hazen Belladonna Pass Pass 14 P* 59 2 NT Pass 3 NT Opening lead — queen of
hearts.
This hand occurred in the match between Italy and the United States in 1959. A bit of luck at one table combined with some chicanery at the other enabled the American team to show a profit of 450 points on the deal. At the first table, Hazen opened third-hand with a diamond and gave Fishbein a rousing vote of condifence by raising his two notrump response to three. Avarelli led the queen of hearts (the Roman pair customarily lead the lower of touching honors), on which East played the jack. Avarelli continued hearts and Fishbein took the third round with the
ace.
FAMOUS HANDS At this point the situation did not look promising to Fishbein, but the 500 spectators who were following each bid and play on a giant electronic screen showing everybody’s hand, knew that everything would turn out
all right.
Fishbein tried the diamond finesse, which worked, and the contract then hinged on whether Avarelli or Belladonna had the ace of clubs. Fortunately, Belladonna showed up with the ace and Fishbein made three notrump for a score of 600
points.
At the second table, the Italian North-South pair were not even in the bidding! It
went:
South West North East Siniscalco Fry Forquet Lazard Pass 2 4 Pass 4 4 Fry and Lazard were playing weak (preemptive) two bids. After Fry's two heart bid it was difficult for Forquet to take any action (vulnerable), particularly opposite a passed partner. When Forquet passed, Lazard, gazing at a six-point hand which he knew was faced by an equally unimpressive array, decided the situation called for desperate measures. Pretending he had a big hand, Lazard jumped to four hearts. This move proved to be unusually successful when Fry went down three for a loss of 150 points. The adverse strength was so divided that neither Forquet nor Siniscalco could double, and the American team gained 5 international match
points.
