ded they would try to arrange a bout with the German during November or December. Mildenberger is committed to participate in a World Boxing Association heavyweight tournament, and a loss in the tour-

out of his right eye, Chuvalo gamely battled back in the third round and staggered Frazier with a blow to the top of

the head.

That was Chuvalo’s last bid for victory as he was pushed into the ropes by Frazier and pounded with a two-fisted body attack. Chuvalo seemed to realize that his long tenure as a title contender was coming to an end, and barely moved from his comer in the fourth round before Frazier ran across the ring and renewed the at-

tack.

A pennant race in the American League is almost as rare as a basement finish by the New York Yankees. But this season the millenium may have finally arrived for the long suffering American League fans. The junior circuit seems to be on its way to its best pennant race since 1948 when Cleveland beat Boston in the only playoff in the history of the league. While National League fans enjoyed close races most of the time during the last two decades. the American League was ruled supreme by the Yankees, who won 14 pennants in 16 years from 1949 to 1964. But it was even more frustrating when the Yanks collapsed because Minnesota in 1965 and Baltimore in 1966 won with only token opposition. Things have finally changed now. There are five teams right in the middle of the race—and none of them are the Yanks, stumbling in ninth place after last year’s cellar finish. Two clubs—the Boston Red Sox and the California Angels —have jumped in the midst of the race since the All-Star break. The Red Sox rattled off their sixth straight victory Wednesday night by downing Baltimore 6-4 to move within 1% games of the Chicago White Sox. Meanwhile, California won its third straight and its 11th in the last 15 games by downing the White Sox 5-2 to

jump just into fourth place just J 2% games out. Detroit slumped to fifth place with a 4-2 loss to Washington. But the Tigers are still in the | race, only ZM games off the pace.

family.

Hamilton, who won the title in 1944, was one of three former champs who dropped out of the tourney starting here today. The others were three-time winner Sam Snead and 1939 champion Henry Pickard.

In the other American League games, Minnesota remained one game behind the Sox by dropping a 9-6 game to j Kansas City and Cleveland beat j New York 5-2.

final 2% innings for the Angels. Minnesota could have tied for first place by dowming Kansas City, but the A’s erupted for five runs in the eighth to wipe out a 6-4 deficit.
