McCarver blasts Cards to lead in pennant race

One taste of the World Series was all Tim McCarver needed. Now he’s even willing to forsake the National League batting title for another crack. McCarver lashed four singles in four appearances Monday night to help the league leading St. Louis Cardinals to a 6-4 victory over the New York Mets and moved into the league’s batting leadership with a .356 average, four points better than Houston’s Rusty Staub. But McCarver’s interests run beyond a batting championship. "For me to lead the league in hitting is out of reach,” said McCarver. ‘Tve been flirting with .300 since I’ve been in the

Heavyweight reinstated

PHILADELPHIA UPI — Heavyweight Leotis Martin, suspended two weeks ago for failure to meet Roger Russell In a June 26 bout here, was reinstated Monday by the Pennsylvania State Athletic Commission. Frank Wildman, commission chairman said the ruling would allow Martin to fight Jimmy Ellis of Miami Beach in a World Boxing Association championship elimination tournament at Houston, Aug. 5 to determine a successor to Cassius Clay. Martin was suspended after suffering a right knee injury in addition to an ailing back during training for the Russell fight. He was examined Monday by an orthopedic specialist and pronounced fit. Dr. Wilbur H. Strickland, commission physician, then removed Martin from the "ill and unavailable list.”

Buckpasser tries for triple sweep NEW YORK UPI —Buckpasser, who has two-thirds of a handicap triple sweep behind him, was assigned 136-pounds Monday for the final leg, the Brooklyn Handicap mile and one quarter Saturday at Aque-

majors but I’ve never made it. Anyway, I’d rather bat .240 and win the pennant than hit .340 and finish out of it. "I got a taste of the World Series in 1964,” explained the Cardinal catcher, "and now I can’t get enough of it. It’s everything it’s built up to be and more.” With the score tied 1-1 in the fourth inning Monday night, McCarver hit his second single and Mike Shannon, who drove in four runs, followed with a two run homer. In the fifth, McCarver’s third straight hit moved Roger Maris, who had singled, to third and Shannon brought him in with a sacrifice

fly.

Elsewhere in the National League, Chicago edged San Francisco 4-3, Atlanta downed Pittsburgh 6-2 and Cincinnati trimmed Philadelphia 8-5 in the only games scheduled. In American League action, California blanked Minnesota 2-0, Boston routed Detroit 7-1, Baltimore beat New York 6-1 and Washington nosed out

Cleveland 4-2.

Billy Williams singled in starting pitcher Rich Nye with the eventual winning run in the top of the ninth inning and Chuck Hartenstein choked off a ninth inning rally with a runner on third to give the Cubs their third straight triumph over the Giants. Hartenstein came in in the ninth to retire pinchhitter Willie McCovey on an infield out to end the game and record his sixth save.

Dick Williams has a formula that builds pennant winners and if Mother Nature plays her part in the plan, the people in Boston are in for a long awaited treat. The ingredients are simple: 25 strong young bodies and a couple of months of good hot weather. The rookie Red Sox manager has already surprised most baseball experts by getting his club off to a strong start during the first half of the season despite having to play 50 games on the road. But Williams thinks has team will get stronger in the next two months. Boston moved into third place Monday behind the hitting of Joe Foy and Carl Yastrzemski and the pitching of Lee Stange as they defeated the slumping Detroit Tigers 7-1. It was Detroit’s seventh straight setback and dropped the Bengals into fourth place. "This is the Red Sox’ time of year,” said the peppery Wil-

liams, after watching his club win its fourth game in a row and picking up its sixth victory in the last seven games. "We have the young ball club and when the young team has ability It should pull away from the older teams in the league
