Military integration WASHINGTON UPI — The Pentagon says that all operators of multi-unit housing and trailer courts in the vicinity of Patuxent River Nacla Air Station in southern Maryland have agreed to rent to Negroes. The announcement from the Defense Department Thursday added that all but one operator had agreed to rent to Negroes in the vicinity of the naval training center at Bainbridge, near Havre De Grace, Md. Segregated housing in both areas recently was declared off-limits to servicemen.
Against separation SAN JUAN UPI — Former governor Luis Munoz Marin said Thursday he would propose an amendment to the Puerto Rico constitution which would prevent any change in the island’s “permanent union with the United States” without a referendum. The island votes July 23 on whether to continue the commonwealth link to the United States, established during Munoz’ term as Puerto Rico’s first elected governor. The alternatives are statehood or complete independence.

Defends Powell WASHINGTON UPI — Now that the tumult and the shouting have died down, the House should admit it erred in depriving Adam Clayton Powell of his seat, a Negro lawmaker said Thursday. Rep. Robert N. C. Nix, D-Pa., told his colleagues the American people have had time to think about Powell, and he was sure they would say to Congress that the Harlem preach-er-politician did not receive a fair trial and that Congress was “honor bound to admit its error, and to correct its wrong.”

Dear Folks: Battles are fought and many I are lost but I don’t think I ever heard of many women permanently winning the battle of the toilet bowl ring ... Have you? I think I found the cause to 90 per cent of our troubles. I have been making tests in hard water areas lately and most of this kind of water leaves rings of discolorations and stains. There we definitely caused by minerals in the water—which none of us can do too much about But ... we can take the top of the tank off and see what’s down inside. I nearly dropped dead when I saw what was in two of them. One tank bottom was cover ed with hard mud and tiny bits of built-up minerals. The other was loaded with orange rust In the bottom and the sides were completely coated with it. This is what caused that discolored bowl each week. If the bottom of the tank is covered with minerals and rust, it stands to reason that some of it is bound to end up in the bowl. So let’s go clean out those water tanks. Pick up as much of the hard residual as possible with your hand. Then use an old sponge and try to pick up what’s left. I did and so can you. Wipe all the discoloration off the insides. Gals, that water is going to be so muddy looking that you will wonder where the bottom went! Now start flushing. Not once but lots of times. Each time wipe the inside with the sponge again untill the discoloration comes off. This may also be cleaned with scouring powder. Then just flush again until it’s spanking clean. I cross my heart that if you get this job done that toilet bowl won’t get stained so quickly. And to my way of thinking, I’d much rather clean out the water tank once in a blue moon than the bowl every day. 7 So pour yourself another cup of coffee, take a deep breath and go open that tank: You’ll probably find your troubles right in the bottom. Ha! Heloise e e e e Dear Heloise: If I run out of black thread when sewing buttons on dark clothes, I use white thread and then dab it with a black felttipped marker. It works fine. Alex Factor e e • • Dear Heloise: While traveling this summer, if you find a pretty or unusual stone that you would like to keep, wash It and then coat It with clear varnish.
It can be used as a paper weight and at the same time a reminder of a fun vacation. Mariann a a a a Dear Heloise: I have a tip for all new mothers. I can take my two-month-old anyplace without hesitation because I know he will never cry. The trick is carrying a jar of baby fruit with me. I dip the tip of his pacifier in the fruit then give it to him, and he’ll stay content even past bottle time if necessary. It’s not only good for him but it’s great for my nerves. Becky Phillips e • • • Dear Heloise: After putting your hair up for a home permanent, use a stretch hair band around your head in front of the rollers and tuck it behind your ears. You’d be amazed how much solution does NOT run down your face, as these stretch bands are very absorbent. Also, you can tuck cotton or tissues between stretch band and hairline to further cut down drips. Pat Leitch
