-Clay prove your public Image Wouldn't it,” Kilroy asked. Clay said he did not attend the hearing to improve his pub* lie image. “I’m not here to compromise my religion,” Clay said. “I want nothing for myself,” Clay told the commissioners. “I know that would be impossible." Commissioner Douglas Hayden asked Clay how a "dedicated religious man can participate in fighting.” Clay said he was a fighter before becoming a minister of the Black Muslim faith. He said a minister "spreads the faith” and that he was a good example to his followers because he doesn’t drink, smoke, is "clean living’ and "not chasing women.” Commissioner Berman said he admired Clay for having the "courage of his convictions” but that the commission must think of the welfare of boxing. After the commission voted to deny the license, Clay said he expected the decision. "In all my court cases the decisions are made before I get there,” he said.

shrubs for several hours. In a dry, clay soil an inch of water will penetrate about 5 inches. It will take 2% inches, or 15 gallons of water to penetrate 12 inches, and 30 gallons to penetrate 24 indies. Hie best way to deep water large trees and shrubs is with a Ross rootfeeder tool. This is a sharp, hollow spike about 30” long. The first and last rule in watering is "be thorough.’

-British Open trick in 1951, shot into the lead with a 68, one stroke better than Englishmen Peter Jones and Jack Wilshire and Scots Jim Hume and David Bonthron. The spotlight, however, remained on the Americans in the 72-hole event which concludes Saturday. Deane Beman, the rookie pro whom Nicklaus considers the most dangerous threat to his reign, was at even par 72 but the other two U.S. pros—Phil Rodgers and Ber Yancey—were in danger of missing the cut. Rodgers had a 74 and Yancey, plagued by an upset stomach, was at 75- after the first round. Amateurs Bob Falkenburg of Los Angeles and Bob Sweeney of Palm Beach, Fla., were virtually certain to be cut after 81s on Wednesday. Brewer, who was deadlocked with 1960 open winner Kel Nagle of Australia, Irish veteran Christy O’Connor, Roberto de Vicenzo of Argentina, Bruce Devlin of Australia and England’s Brian Franklin, had a sizzling 31 on the back nine over the sun-baked Royal Liverpool Club course and appeared ready to make a run at the leaders. The conservative Texan, who

waa playing only Ms second complete round over the 6,995yard, par-72 course, shot a disastrous 89 on the front side but birdied the 10th end finished eagle, birdie, birdie to offer the strongest American challenge. Among those at 71 with Nicklaus and Sanders were five-time winner Peter Thomson of Australia, Peter Allis and John Cockin of England and Aussie Stan Peach. South African Gary Player, the 1959 champion, was at 72. Nicklaus, playing extremely well from tee to green, managed only three birdies because of putting difficulties. Big Jack, the 11-4 favorite to add this title to his recent U.S. Open victory, required 34 putts in all.

LOST THEIR BUTTONS MOSCOW UTT—Little things like buttons and bolts are snagging Soviet industry, the government newspaper Izvestia reported today. The paper said several factory owners complained shortages of them and other minor items was holding up production of many consumer goods. . A Ukranian drees* factory manager said he hasn’t got file buttons to finish up his dresses and production of sofa-beds was held up by a lack of bolts. “We have to send couriers to Moscow to run them (the bolts) down,” the furniture-maker said.
