Tutwiler favored to win amateur crown

The hits have been coming few and far between for Mike Shannon lately, but the St. Louie third baseman still has managed to establish himself as one of baseball’s deadliest clutch hitters. Shannon, an uncanny late innings hitter currently in the throes of “a yearly slump”, smashed a two run eigth inning homer Wednesday night to rally the National League leading Cardinals to a 4-3 •victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates in the league's only scheduled game. In the night’s only American League game, Cleveland

downed the league le ad i n g Chicago White Sox 5-3. Shannon singled in the sixth inning to drive in Roger Maris with the Cardinals’ first run as St. Louis took a 2-0 lead. The Pirates erased that margin in the eighth on a two run homer by Gene Alley, his fifth of the season, Jerry May’s triple and pinch hitter Manny Mota’s sacrifice fly. Tutwiler bested Randy Reifers, Indianapolis, 5 and 4, in the second round of match play after disposing of Bill Campbell, Franklin, 6 and 4, in the morning round. Tutwiler closed out Reifers with a birdie on the 14th hole. The Indianapolis car dealer, a Walker Cup veteran, had been the victim of putting trouble in qualifying rounds and was nine strokes of the pace of medalist Jerry Schreiber of Evansville. Schreiber, however, was upset in the first round, 2 and 1, by Joe Harbin. Indianapolis. Harbin then dropped a 3 and 2 match to Royer, last year s runnerup to Tutwiler.
