Water Consumers • NOTICE - Th* demand for water in our system has been much greater than normal during the dry weather. The system is designed to meet any anticipated de* mend, however, due to abnormal usage, a large high service booster pump that is not normally used has to bo utilized to maintain proper supply and pressure. The increased pressures and velocity in the mains causes rust to bo dislodged in the mains causing this rusty water condition. We suggest that you take the following steps to improve your service. 1. Do not attempt to wash clothes when you notice this condition. 2. Do not use any more water than necessary for personal or household needs. However, lawn sprinkling may improve your supply. 3. After the cold water has cleared, the next morning BEFORE you use any water, open the drain cock at the bottom of your water heater and drain off a small amount until it clears. 4. After you have taken these necessary steps and you still have a serious condition, call the water department and we will flush the main serving your location. HOWEVER, main flushing will not help your condition until after you have taken the above steps. Thank You, DEPT. OF WATER WORKS

Solons argue over poverty in Dixie WASH INGTON UPI — A Senate inquiry into starvation in rural Mississippi has ended on a sour note with Republicans angry, administration officials bitter, and Democrats shaking their heads. Before the hearings were brought to a close Wednesday Sen. Jacob K. Javits, R-N.Y., angrily accused the agriculture department “bureaucracy” of dragging its feet in feeding the poor in the Mississippi delta. Agriculture Secretary Orville L. Freeman reported that he resented the implication “we are sitting on our backsides doing nothing.” Sen. Joseph S. Clark, D-Fa., chairman of the subcommittee, repeatedly gavelled for order as Javits pleaded to “let us have this out.” At one point, Clark suggested in exasperation that the two men "act a little more mature about this” or step outside to settle their differences. At the conclusion of the hearings, Sens. Javits, George L. Murphy, R-Calif., and Winston L. Prouty, R-Vt, accused the Johnson administration of allowing poverty conditions in Mississippi “to grow and persist.” “Republicans must come together within our party to call for an end to this government paralysis,” the three Senators said in a joint statment.

Wall Street Chatter NEW YORK UPI — E. F. Hutton A Co. Inc. suggests the Dow Jones industrial average is now at a minor resistance level, though it is not expected to be much of a barrier to an advance with other market statistics now doing better than this indicator. “As it has been all year,” the analyst says, “the bulk of the market remains far stronger than the ... average.”

Dear Heloise: Silk lamp shades are so expensive and they will get dirty. I experimented several years ago with one I was going to discard if it couldn’t be salvaged by washing—and here is the way I’ve washed all my FABRIC shades since then. I make some suds in the bath tub with a mild detergent and cool water. Then I put in a couple of dirty silk shades and roll them over and over until thoroughly wet. Next I gently scrub dirty spots on the edges with a soft brush or wash cloth. At this point, some shades with glued down hems will begin to look hopeless. Never fear —after they are dry the edges can be reguled. Drain the tub and close the shower curtain. Turn on a gentle spray of cold water from the shower to rinse. Be sure to get all the detergent out. The shades will now look like a saggy, baggy elephant, but the fabric will shrink as they dry. Tie a string around the cross wire at the top. of the shade and either suspend It from the shower rod or take it outside and tie it to the clothesline. Let it drip dry. Last of all, glue back any edges that may have come unglued and congratulate yourself on saving money by making the old shades look new again. Caution: Don’t leave them soaking too long. If the phone rings, lift them out of the water. Alice Spaulding • • • * P. S. I assumed everyone washed fabric lamp shades, but yesterday I went shopping with a friend who was going to replace five shades. When I told her about this, she went and tried it This morning she called and said, “I love you. You saved me $30.00 yesterday.” How about that? * * « • Dear Heloise: My son is stationed overseas and his military address is not likely to change for some time. So I had some name stickers made with his full overseas address for my use. It is so much easier for me just to stick one of these on his letters rather than writing out the address which was always hard for me to remember. I also mailed him some to send to his friends. Mrs. J. McKenna • • • • Dear Heloise: What does one do to keep the wick from disappearing in those candle warmers that come with coffee servers, casseroles,

etc. The wax keeps melting up around the wick until the wick disappears, the flame goes out and there’s no longer anything left to light! I’ve tried pouring the melted wax off, but it doesn’t work too well—drips all over. Any suggestions? A Reader o o o * I too have tried to salvage some of these short candles without much success. I had some squat patio candles in colored glasses melt and haven’t yet figured out how to fix them. If anyone rise had this problem and solved it, drop us a line in care of this paper. We’d love to hear from you. Heloise o o o o Dear Heloise: A hollow plastic rolling pin makes a wonderful container in which to carry eggs on a camping trip. Place it in a jar to hold it on end, then break each egg into a dish and pour it from the dish into the rolling pin. (Mine easily holds eighteen eggs.) To use, just pour out eggs one at a time. And It’s a simple matter to keep them refrigerated in an ice chest with no worry about breakage or spoilage. LaVone Tufford • o o o Dear Heloise: I carry a heavy white bath towel in my car. "When parking in the sun, I fold the towd in half and place it over the steering wheel so it won’t get too hot to touch. When I remove it from the steering wheel, I plane it against the back of the seat to keep my back from touching that hot upholstery. A. R. M.
